Witham coached the MSU men's basketball team from 1945 to 1956 and built a record of 166-70 during that span. The 1947 Mankato team went 17-4 and advanced to the finals of the NAIA tournament in Kansas City where they lost to Marshall in the national championship game. MSU also made a NAIA postseason appearance in 1947-48. Witham's teams won outright conference titles in 1947, 1948, 1949, 1950, 1953 and tied in 1952, 1954 and 1956. Witham, who also had coaching stints at Bemidji State and Iowa State prior to coming to MSU, owned a career collegiate coaching mark of 229-119. He also coached the MSU baseball team for three seasons (1953, '54 and '56) and was an assistant with the football team. Witham was a graduate of Bemidji State, owned a master's degree from Minnesota and a doctoral degree from Indiana.
