MSU teams from this year captured the North Central Conference cross country, indoor track and outdoor track and field titles...Cross country team finished second at NCAA's that year and outdoor track and field team finished 21st at NCAA meet...John Savonen was a cross country All-American (24th)...Outdoor All-Americans included David Jones (third in the three-mile run) and Mike Hazelhoff (fifth in the high jump)...Capturing conference indoor titles that year were Jack Pollard (600-yd dash), Roger Spee (1,000-yard run), mile relay (John Peterson, Kipper, Kiser, Pollard), Mike Hazelhoff (high jump), John Moes (triple jump), and Sam Oleson (shot put) and the 4x100-yd relay team (Kipper, John Peterson, Kiser and Pollard). Capturing outdoor conference titles were Jack Pollard (440-yd dash), mile relay (Kipper, Kiser, Fischer, Pollard) and Gene Bygd (javelin)...Captained by Dan Baumgartner and coached by MSU legends Earl "Bud" Myers and Chuck Petersen.
