Dan McCarrell

MSU's all-time winningest men's basketball coach, Dan McCarrell guided the Mavericks to a 284-189 record in 17 seasons from 1984-2001.

The Mavericks went 20-10 in 1989-90 to become the first team since 1978-79 to win 20 games in a season and he led the Mavericks to first-division finishes in the North Central Conference in 11 of the his last 12 years with the program. Under his leadership, three different Maverick players led the NCC in scoring, including Dave Gilreath, who ranked third in NCAA Division II in scoring in 1984-85 with 25.6 ppg. Another one of his MSU players, Brian Koepnick (MSU 1985-89), holds several school records and finished his career as the school's all-time leading scorer. Forward Pat Coleman, who earned All-America honors when he led the NCC in scoring and finished the season 11th on NCAA Division II scoring chart with 23.3 ppg average in 1995-96, like Koepnick, is in the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame. In 1996-97, forward David Kruse led the NCC in rebounding and finished third in scoring was named an Academic All-American and became the men's baskeetball program's first recipient of a NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship. 

Before coming to MSU, McCarrell led North Park College to NCAA Division III championships in 1978, 1979, and 1980. He was named Kodak Coach of the Year the three years the Vikings won national titles. He was named NCAA Division III Coach of the Decade for the 1970s at the national tournament banquet in 1980. McCarrell was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame in 1987 and he has coached nine All-Americans. Four of his players were selected in the National Basketball Association draft.
