National runners-up in 1947...This MSU team overturned a number of the nation's best teams before being stopped by Marshall College (WVa) 73– 59 in the national championship game...12 players making the trip included: Forwards – – Don Olson, Dewey Nelson, Ken Swanson, Wally Spieman and Paul Hustad; Centers–– Henry Epp and Wally Eckman; Guards – – Bill Sperlich, Jack Hodapp, Wayne Young, John Knoff and Denny Kigin...Team took 16 – 3 record into tourney, ending season at 20 – 4 ...Epp received Second – Team All – American honors...All five starters named All – Conference –– Sperlich, Nelson and Epp first team; Olson and Hodapp second team; Coached by Jim Witham.
