#17 Mavericks Rout Field in Second Massive Meet

Mankato, Minn. --- #17 Minnesota State once again routed the field in capturing the Massive Meet #2 title.  MSU posted a total of 224 points, far outpacing runner-up #14 Colorado Mesa's 71 points.  A total of 10 teams ended up scoring points in the event, with Minnesota State collecting over 44% of all available points.
 
The four scoring Mavericks who participated in the mile run all posted career-best times, led by senior Ben Schmied who won the event thanks to his time of 4:15.94.  After Schmied, the remaining MSU scorers were all sophomores as Ray Ure (4:20.73) was runner-up in the event, with Adam Bohm (4:24.39) and Carter Owen (4:24.84) taking sixth and seventh, respectively.
 
Junior Carson Dittel led a Maverick sweep of the top four spots in the pole vault thanks to clearing 5.00 m (16' 4.75").  Following Dittel was a trio of sophomores as Jedidah Hansen took second with a career-best effort of 4.78 m (15' 8.25"), followed by Alex Berg in third (4.63 m' 15" 2.25") and Austin Frank in fourth (4.48 m; 14' 8.25").  Also earning points for MSU was freshman Braxton Stewart in seventh (2.98 m; 9.25"). 
 
MSU also swept the top three spots in the 200-meter dash, led by season-best efforts by event-winner sophomore Steven Marks (22.08) and runner-up senior Eddie Blackwell (22.16).  Freshman Thomas Rosengren took third place with a career-best time of 22.68.  Also scoring for the Mavericks in the 200-meter dash was freshman Brock Unger in sixth (22.84). 
 
Sophomore Aiden Buendorf claimed the individual title honors in the high jump thanks to clearing 2.09 m (6' 10.25") on his second attempt at that height, the only competitor to do so.  Sophomore teammate Jacob Ziebarth took second with a career-best clearance 2.04 m (6' 8.25"), with freshman Jory Peters taking fifth (1.89 m; 6' 2.25"). 
 
James Gilbert kept up his strong junior season in the long jump by leading a Maverick charge of five of the top seven finishes via claiming the individual title with a leap of 7.67 m (25' 2").  Sophomore Slade Heald earned runner-up honors (7.04 m; 23' 1.25"), and junior Naishaun Jernigan (6.95 m; 22' 9.75") was fourth.  Also earning team points for MSU in the long jump were freshman Camden Combs in sixth (6.58 m; 21' 7.25") and senior Reece Shannon in seventh (6.33 m; 20' 9.25"). 
 
The Maverick 4x400 relay team of freshman Qai Hussey, senior Rashion Walker, sophomore Junior Pontes Da Veiga, and senior Kenry Atubel took 0.01 seconds off of their previous best time of the year to win the event, this time clocking in at 3:16.20.  A second 4x400 relay team took fourth with a time of 3:23.35, comprised of sophomore Kyler Bade, Blackwell, Rosengren, and freshman Jack Raverty.
 
Junior Abel Christiansen was MSU's best finisher in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles thanks to his runner-up time of 8:08.  Fellow junior Renald Pierre was right behind in third (8.15), with senior Justus Adams taking fifth (8.31). 
 
The 60-meter dash also saw a Maverick earn runner-up honors in the finals as redshirt freshman Trey Vaval's time of 6.92 being good for second.  Junior Nicholas Sharma posted a season-best time of 7.01 to take fifth.
 
Junior Tanner Maier turned in a season-best time in a fast 800-meter run competition, with his raw unadjusted time of 1:51.30 good for second.  Over in the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Nikolai Schmanski turned in a career-best time of 15:33.19 to take eighth.
 
The weight throw saw MSU claim four of the top seven spots, led by junior Carter Aguilera taking second with his mark of 18.50 m (60' 8.50").  Sophomore Thomas Spoehr (17.72 m; 58' 1.75") and junior Tommy Kucera (17.66 m; 57' 11.25") finished fourth and fifth respectively, while sophomore Zachary Shaner (16.42 m; 53' 10.50") posted a seventh-place finish.
 
In the shot put, junior Sam Moore was MSU's top finisher with a career-best mark of 15.47 m (50' 9.25") standing fourth.  Kucera was right behind in fifth (15.34 m; 50' 4"), with freshman Ben Wieser finishing eighth (14.58 m; 47' 10"). 
 
Sophomore Lorenzo Jones notched a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 14.17 m (46' 6"), with teammate freshman Anthony Borom coming in fifth (13.50 m; 44' 3.50"). 
 
Minnesota State will conclude its 2022-23 regular season in their next action as it hosts the Maverick Invitational starting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, in Myers Field House.
