Minnesota State Women’s Hockey Signs Six for 2018-19

Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey coach John Harrington has announced that six student-athletes have signed national letters of intent to attend Minnesota State University.

This year's early signing class is comprised of three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender.

Brooke Bryant, a forward from Linden, Calif., is a member of the Anaheim Lady Ducks U19 team. She has attended three USA Hockey National Developments Camps. Before playing for the Lady Ducks, Bryant previously played for California Wave teams that recorded a top-six finish at the 2016 USA U16 National Championship and a third-place finish at the 2017 USA U19 National Championship. In her two seasons with the Wave, Bryant tallied 64 goals and 64 assists for 128 points. A multi-sport athlete, Bryant has been a four-year letterwinner in both volleyball and softball during high school. In addition, she was a member of the 2016 Junior Women Inline Hockey Team USA.

Coach Harrington on Bryant: "Brooke is a right-handed forward, who implements effort, skill and grittiness in her game. She has playmaking ability at the center position, as well as the skill to create her own chances. She competes hard at both ends of the ice."

Claire Butorac, a forward hailing from Andover, Minn., is in her second season as team captain at Andover. A member of the varsity team since eighth grade, Butorac has garnered 37 goals and 50 assists for 87 points in her high school career, including career bests in goals (16), assists (20) and points (36) in 2016-17. She has twice been named team MVP and Most Dedicated. In addition Butorac earned all-conference honors in 2015-16 and 2016-17, while being named an all-conference honorable mention in 2014-15. A two sport athlete, she is also a three-year member and two-year letterwinner on the Huskies' lacrosse team.

Coach Harrington on Butorac: "Claire is a right-handed forward, who has worked hard on and off the ice to develop her game to a high level over the last couple of years. Claire is a strong skater and her speed will benefit her game at the college level."

Morgan Hatcher, a Harrison Township, Mich., native, is a defenseman for the Detroit Belle Tire U19 team. Hatcher, whose uncles Kevin Hatcher and Derian Hatcher played in the National Hockey League, has attended two USA National Development Camps. She was a member of the Belle Tire U16 team that won the 2017 USA Hockey National Championship. In addition, her teams claimed three state championships.

Coach Harrington on Hatcher: "A strong right-handed defenseman, Morgan brings a physical presence and offensive abilities to the game. Morgan has a great hockey lineage in her family as two of her uncles, Kevin Hatcher and Derian Hatcher, had long and successful careers in the National Hockey League."

Madison Oelkers, who calls Warroad, Minn., home, is in her fourth season as a forward for the Warroad Warriors, where she has helped lead her teams to a 51-18-6 record over the last three seasons. Oelkers has reached both the 100-assist and 200-point plateaus in her high school career. In 2016-17, she led the state of Minnesota in assists (46), while ranking third in points (85) and 15th in goals (39). In her second season as team captain of the Warriors, Oelkers was the team MVP in 2016-17. She has been selected to all-conference and all-section teams three times each, and she was an all-state honorable mention pick in 2016-17. Oelkers has helped the Warriors to two sectional championships and two third-place finishes at the state championships. In addition, she was a one-time letterwinner in golf and two-time letterwinner in volleyball at Warroad.

Coach Harrington on Oelkers: "Madison was a linemate at Warroad High School with Demi Gardner and Mariah Gardner — two current Mavericks. A left-handed forward, Madison works tirelessly to be involved in the game, and gets herself in position to put shots on net."
Abbey Levy, a Congers, N.Y., native, is in her third season as a goaltender for Shattuck-St. Mary's U19 team, where she has helped the Sabres to a 101-14-9 record and two national championships (2015-16, 2016-17) in her first two seasons. In addition, she won a New York State Hockey Championship as a freshman. Levy was a member of World Select Teams (West Coast Selects) that claimed a gold medal in Helsinki, Finland in 2014 and a silver medal in Bolzano, Italy in 2015. A multi-sport athlete, Levy has also lettered in basketball, softball and volleyball. She was recruited out of high school for both basketball and hockey.

Coach Harrington on Levy: "Abbey is very athletic goaltender, who covers a lot of net, and has developed a style that takes advantage of her size in goal. A State Hockey Champion in New York as a freshman, and a USA Hockey National Champion at Shattuck-St. Mary's at the U16 and U19 levels during her sophomore and junior years, respectively, Abbey understands what it takes to be successful on the ice."

Anna Wilgren, a defenseman from Hudson, Wis., has tallied 158 goals and 63 assists for 221 points in her first three seasons playing for the Hudson Raiders. Wilgren owns the school record in scoring, which she achieved with 64 goals and 20 assists for 84 points in 2016-17. She led the state of Wisconsin in goals scored and finished second in points in 2016-17, and she finished in the top three in points in three consecutive seasons. She is a two-time First Team All-State selection, a three-time All-Big Rivers Conference selection and was she chosen as a Third Team All-USA selection in 2016-17. Wilgren was the Molly Engstrom Award winner,  and a East Metro Girls Player of the Year Finalist as she helped the Raiders to the best record in school history, a first-place conference finish, a sectional runner-up finish, and a regional championship in 2016-17. She attended the U18 USA Hockey National Camp in 2016-17. In 2015-16, Wilgren was a Play in the Dells Athlete of the Week, a Pioneer Press Athlete of the Week and a Jinelle Siergiej Award nominee.

Coach Harrington on Wilgren: "A left-handed defenseman, Anna has outstanding hockey skills along with an athletic sense of how to play the game. Anna has played at the forward position at times, but we like her skill set and ice vision from the back line."

"I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of this balanced incoming class," coach Harrington said about this year's recruiting class. "These student-athletes bring size, skill, and a competitive attitude to our program. My staff and I are excited because not only are they outstanding hockey players, but outstanding students as well. They will be great additions to Minnesota State University, our Maverick Hockey Team, and the MavFam."
