Minnesota State Women’s Hockey Set to Face Minnesota Duluth

What's On Tap: Minnesota State women's hockey faces Minnesota Duluth in a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey Association series on Friday and Saturday in Duluth, Minn. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m., on Friday and 4:07 p.m., on Saturday at Amsoil Arena.
 
Last Time on the Ice: Minnesota State (2-9-1, 1-7-0-0 WCHA) was swept by No. 5 Ohio State in a two-game WCHA series on Friday and Saturday at OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The Mavericks held leads in both games but were unable to hold on – dropping the first game 2-1 and the second game 5-3.

WCHA Rookie of the Week: Freshman center Brittyn Fleming (2-6--8) was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week, powered by Goodwood Hockey. She tied for first among WCHA freshmen with two goals last week and tied for second with two points. She led all WCHA freshmen in faceoff percentage (.529), tied for first in shooting percentage (1.000) and was second in faceoff wins (9). Fleming scored her first career goal against No. 5 Ohio State on Friday, and she scored her second goal on Saturday afternoon. Both of her goals were go-ahead goals.

Mighty McLaughlin: Junior forward Jordan McLaughlin (4-5--9) tallied her team-leading fourth goal of the season at No. 5 Ohio State on Nov. 11. McLaughlin's goal gave the Mavericks a 2-0 lead at the time. She leads Minnesota State with nine points on the season.
 
Jackson's Career High: Sophomore defenseman Jordan Jackson (2-3--5) tied for the team lead with two points last week. Jackson scored the Mavericks' first goal against No. 5 Ohio State on Saturday and then assisted on the second goal as the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Her two points in the game were a career high. Jackson's two points were the second most among WCHA blue liners last week and she was first in power play goals (1). She also garnered a +1 rating and four blocked shots.
 
Antony's Point Streak: Junior forward Emily Antony (2-3--5) tallied one assist in each of the Mavericks' games with No. 5 Ohio State over the weekend. Antony assisted on freshman center Brittyn Fleming's goal on Friday, which gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead, and on Fleming's goal on Saturday that put Minnesota State up 3-2 at the time. Antony, who now has a three-game point streak, led the team in assists last week and tied for the team lead in points (2). Her assist total was tied for fourth highest in the WCHA last week. 
 
Balanced Attack: Thirteen different Mavericks have scored a goal this season, including seven who have scored at least two goals. Junior forward Jordan McLaughlin (4-5--9) leads the team with four goals, while senior forwards Lindsey Coleman (3-2--5) and Amanda Conway (3-2--5) are tied for second with three goals each.

Clogging the Shooting Lanes: The Mavericks finished last season second in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and fourth in the nation with 568 blocked shots. Minnesota State has picked up where it left off — leading the nation with 227 blocked shots. Senior defenseman and team captain Anna Keys is fourth in the nation with 33 blocked shots, while junior defenseman Emma Wittchow and freshman defenseman Jessica Kondas are tied for eighth in the nation with 27 each. Minnesota State's season high for blocked shots is 33, which was achieved against then-No. 9 ranked Robert Morris on Oct. 7. The 33 blocked shots is the highest total by the Mavericks since they recorded 34 blocked shots at Wisconsin on Feb. 26, 2016.
 
Scouting Minnesota Duluth: The Bulldogs (5-8-0, 3-5-0-0 WCHA), who are 3-3-0 in their last six games, are coming off of a 3-2 loss to Bemidji State in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game on Nov. 6 in Cambridge, Minn. 
 
Freshmen forwards Naomi Rogge (6-6--12) and Ashton Bell (6-3--9) are tied for the team lead in goals with six. Rogge leads the team in points with 12, while Bell is second with nine.   
 
Last season, The Mavericks played to a 1-3-0 record against the Bulldogs. The Mavericks win against Minnesota Duluth, which was ranked third in the nation at the time, came on Dec. 10, 2016. The win was the Mavericks' first win over a ranked opponent since a 3-0 win over then-No. 2 ranked Wisconsin in the WCHA Quarterfinals on March 1, 2014.
 
Looking Ahead: Minnesota State travels to Washington D.C., for a pair of nonconference games with Boston University and Northeastern on Nov. 24 and Nov. 25, respectively.
