Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State junior righthanded pitcher Tyler Frohwirth (Waukesha, Wis.) has been selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 31st round (917th overall) in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft.
Frohwirth has made 33 appearances, all in relief, in his three seasons with the Mavericks. He owns a 3-0 career won-loss record with one save, a 4.50 earned run average while striking out 24 and walking 12 in 32 innings pitched for his college career, which includes a redshirt year in 2013. He is the son of former major league pitcher Todd Frohwirth.
Beginning with Jerry Terrell in 1968 when he was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 18th round, 407th overall, Frohwirth's selection brings the total number of Minnesota State players selected in the history of the MLB draft to 34.
Minnesota State finished its 2016 season with a 36-18 record and advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason tournament for the 11th straight year.
