Mavericks Extend Winning Streak to 10 Games With Sweep of Sioux Falls on Sunday

Luke Waldek generated eight runs batted in after the completion of the two Maverick victories

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball team added two more to their win streak on Sunday afternoon after 23-12 and 6-3 wins at the MSU Baseball Complex in Mankato, Minn.

After the two wins, Minnesota State improved its 2016 record to 33-14 (24-9 NSIC) while finishing out its regular season at home.

Game one saw a few crooked numbers put up on the board by both teams as the Mavericks went on to claim the 23-12 triumph in seven innings.

Sioux Falls took their first lead of the day in the top of the third inning, scoring two runs on a Dylan Gavin home run to left field.

The Mavericks answered right back as the put up six in the bottom half of the inning.  Senior Kyle Toth went yard for the fifth time in 2016 to tie the game up at 2-2.  Then with sophomore Josh Wenzel on third and junior Eric Peterson on second, sophomore Luke Waldek punched a single through the right side to bring both in, taking a 4-2 lead.  Two more were scored in the inning when sophomore Dylan Dresel went deep to left for his team-leading eighth homer of the year, to make it 6-2.

The Cougars chipped away with another two in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, while MSU kept pulling further away with six over that span to open the gap at 12-6.

Sioux Falls tied the game with six runs in the top of the sixth inning on six hits, digging into the Minnesota State bullpen.

The Mavericks reigned though as the unleashed 11 runs on nine hits in the bottom of the sixth stanza, including eight runs with two outs, to out right win the game at 23-12.

The Mavericks used a total of five arms in the high-scoring affair with starting pitcher, freshman Daniel Feneis doing most of the work with 3.2 innings pitched.  Senior Reliever Dakota Belter picked up the win throwing .1 inning in the top of the sixth, before the Maverick offensive onslaught began, increasing his record to 6-0.

At the plate, MSU was led by a number of players, including Toth, Wenzel, Peterson, and freshman Jordan Hart who all tallied three hits with Toth scoring five times and batting in four, Wenzel scoring twice and bringing in three, Peterson scoring twice, and Hart scoring twice.  Waldek went 2-3 in the contest with two walks while scoring three, tying a career high, and batting in five.

Game two did not see the roller-coaster number that game one saw as the Mavericks controlled the game for the 6-3 win.

Sioux Falls grabbed their second and last lead of the day in the top of the first Brent Griffing-Jarvis hit a solo-shot to right field to go up 1-0.

The Mavericks tied the game with one in the bottom half and took the lead with two more in the bottom of the second.  Minnesota State's first three runs of the contest featured a solo-home run from senior Chase Lonetti, in the bottom of the second for his second of the season.

Minnesota State added another in the bottom of the fifth before the Cougars tacked on two in the top half of the sixth frame, but that wasn't enough as MSU scored one more in each of the next two innings for insurance and eventually garnering the win.

Junior starter, Mitchell Bauer improved his season record to 6-3 on the year in throwing six innings, giving up three earned runs on seven Cougar hits and striking out two.  Belter garnered the save in the match for his team-leading sixth of 2016.

Offensively, the Mavericks were paced by Peterson, Waldek, senior Taylor Branstad, and Lonetti who all had two hits while Waldek led the team with three runs batted in. Both Peterson and Lonetti had two runs in the nine-run bout.

The Mavericks will open up play-off action next week in St. Cloud, Minn., as the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament site was predetermined at the beginning of the season.  Times and opponents have yet to be determined for post-season play.  Stay up to date with Minnesota State Baseball information at msumavericks.com
