Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball team picked up another two wins Wednesday afternoon at the MSU Baseball Complex. Game one was ended in walk-off 8-7 fashion while the Mavericks prevailed in game two with a 5-4 win.
With the two victories, the Mavericks increased their record to 29-14 overall and 20-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
It looked as though Wayne State would take the first game early on as
Curtis Bussard hit a grand slam in the top of the second inning to put the Wildcats up 4-0.
It didn't take long for the Mavericks to grab the lead as a grand slam from sophomore
Dylan Dresel evened things up along with another run from sophomore
Josh Wenzel put the MSU ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the third inning.
Dresel's seventh homer of the season was just the first of five hits he had on the day.
Wayne State responded with two more in the top of the fourth to take back their lead with two solo-home runs to left center field, including
Bussard's second of the game.
Minnesota State knotted the game at 6-6 in the bottom half of the inning when senior
Chase Lonetti scored from second base on junior
Eric Peterson's single to right.
In extra innings, Wayne State put together two hits and a walk to tack on one run in the top of the eighth inning making it a 7-6 ball game.
With two outs in the bottom of the eight, senior
Kyle Toth drew a walk to bring up
Wenzel. Â
Wenzel drilled the ball over the center-field fence to bring both in and win the game for the Mavericks.
Leading the way for the Mavericks at the plate was
Dresel who went 3-4 with a home run, a double, one run and four RBI. Â
Wenzel and
Lonetti both produced two hits with
Wenzel scoring two runs and batting in another two and
Lonetti scoring one.
Sophomore
Dalton Roach started the game going four inning allowing six earned runs on four hits and eight strike outs. Â Senior
Dakota Belter came in to get the final two outs in the bottom of the eighth in picking up his fourth win of the season and improving his record to 4-0.
In game two, the Mavericks took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on three hits, including an RBI double from
Toth.
The Wildcats sparked for three in the top of the third to take the 3-2 lead, but lasted ever so short as Minnesota State tied it right back up in the bottom half of the inning when
Taylor Branstad hit his sixth homer of the year to right field.
The Mavericks added two more in the bottom of the fourth, laying stake to a 5-3 lead.
The Wildcats tried clawing back with one in the top of the fifth but were shut down by
Belter in the final two innings for his team-leading fifth save of the season. Â
Junior
Mitchell Bauer moved his record to 5-3 on the year with the win in throwing five innings with eight strike outs. Â The right hander gave up four earned runs on six Wayne State hits. Â
Offensively, MSU was led by
Toth's 3-4 performance with two runs batted in while
Dresel accounted for two hits and one run scored.
The Mavericks will play next on Friday and Saturday, May 6-7, as they host the University of Sioux Falls in a four-game series at the MSU Baseball Complex. Â First pitch for Friday is slated at 1:30 p.m. while a noon start is scheduled for Saturday.
