Mavericks Fall to Weevils in Regional Semi-Final Game

Box Score   St. Cloud, Minn. ---   Minnesota State concluded its 2016 season with a 13-6 loss to Arkansas Monticello at the 2016 NCAA Division II Central Region Tournament.

With one out in the top of the third, Arkansas Monticello leftfielder Kevin Fitzpatrick got on on an error and was knocked in with Corey Wood's RBI double to rightfield. Travis Steinke singled to put runners on the corners and a two-run double to left by Brian Ray made it a 3-0 UAM lead. Then, in the top of the fourth and with two out and runners on first and second, Wood doubled to center to score Evan Comeau and Fitzpatrick scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.

The Mavericks responded with a big fourth inning, scoring six runs on five hits and an error.  A walk to Josh Wenzel was followed by Taylor Branstad's single. Luke Waldek singled to score Wenzel before Chase Lonetti walked. Jordan Hart followed with an RBI single to left and throwing error by the leftfielder scored two Maverick runners. Dylan Dresel two-run double down rightfield line made it 5-5 and Eric Peterson's RBI double to right scored Dresel to give Minnesota State the lead.

UAM retook the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs of its own, making it 8-6 and when they tacked on five more in the top of the sixth, it became 13-6 game.

The Mavericks used five pitchers in the game. Daniel Feneis, who came on in the fourth in relief of starter Josh Matheson, took the loss.  The Boll Weevils, who advance to tomorrow's championship game vs. Central Missouri, outhit Minnesota State by a 17-7 margin in the game.  Senior Taylor Branstad and freshman Jordan Hart had two hits a piece for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks, who were making their 11th straight NCAA regional appearance, went 2-2 at the tournament and complete their season with a 36-18 record.
