Box Score 2 WINONA, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball team claimed two wins in the first-two games against Winona State.
With the two victories, the Mavericks improved their record to 25-14 overall and 16-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Minnesota State used five runs in the top of the fifth inning along with starting pitcher, sophomore
Brody Rodning's 6.2 shutout innings to surge a 6-0 win past the Warriors in game one.
In the top of the second, sophomore
Luke Waldek put a charge into the ball sending it over  the left field wall for his seventh of the season to put MSU up 1-0.  The Mavericks carried the one to nothing lead all the way to the sixth, where they tacked on five more to cement their victory.
The Mavericks used three hits, took advantage of two Winona State errors and three walks to tally their five runs in the top of the sixth. Â Senior
Taylor Branstad collected two RBI in the frame while freshman
Jordan Hart picked up one.
With the win, Rodning picked up his fifth victory and improved his record to 5-1 on the year. Â In his 6.2 innings of work, the left-hander recorded seven strikeouts and allowed three hits.
After getting suspended due to rain on Saturday in the top of the fifth inning, the second game was resumed Sunday at noon.
In game two, Winona State grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, but it was a two-run fifth inning and a two-RBI single to left in the bottom of the sixth from senior
Kyle Toth that contributed to Minnesota State's 5-1 win.
Waldek also tallied an RBI in the top of the 7th for insurance purposes to make it a 5-1 clip.
Offensively, the Mavericks were led by
Toth,
Waldek, and sophomore
Ryan Moffett. Each picked up two hits while
Toth tallied three runs batted in and one scored while
Moffett scored two with a double.
On the mound, starting pitcher, freshman
Jon Ludwig threw four innings while giving up one-earned run on three hits. The right-hander struck out four batters in garnering his second win of the season and improving his record to 2-2. Â Senior
Peter Gaustad threw three innings in picking up his first save of 2016.
Minnesota State will finish their series with the Warriors today, May 1st, with two-seven inning contests.
