Box Score 2 WINONA, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball team wrapped up their four-game series with the Winona State Warriors in Winona, Minn., Sunday afternoon with a couple of more wins in completing the four-game sweep winning game three 2-1 and game four 4-1.
With the two victories, the Mavericks improved their record to 27-14 overall and 18-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Minnesota State struck first in the top of the second. Â With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore
Luke Waldek took advantage of a pass ball and advanced home to give the Mavericks a 1-0 advantage. Â
With two outs in the top of the sixth, junior
Eric Peterson made his way home on an infield single from sophomore
Dylan Dresel to take a 2-0 lead. Â Winona State cut the Maverick lead to one in the bottom half of the sixth as starting pitcher
Josh Matheson was relieved after throwing 5.1 innings by senior
Dakota Belter. Â Matheson exited the game with on earned run allowed on six hits while striking out three. Â
Belter finished the game off and collected his third save of the season, mean while
Matheson improved his record to 4-0 on year with the victory.
At the plate, senior
Kyle Toth knocked two hits in his four at bats while
Peterson and
Waldek each tallied one hit and one run.
In game two, the Mavericks yet again jumped out to take the first lead, scoring a run in each of the first two innings.
Senior
Taylor Branstad hit a two-out double to right center after
Peterson singled up the middle and scored from first base to take the 1-0 lead. Â In the top of the second,
Dresel led off with his sixth home run of the season to go up 2-0.
The Mavericks added to their lead in the top of the fourth when freshman
Jordan Hart also showcased some power hitting his sixth of the season to make it 3-0.Â
The Warriors tallied their lone run off of starting pitcher, freshman
Daniel Feneis in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Tyler Nehring lead off with a home run.
Sophomore
Ryan Moffett added to the Maverick lead, shooting his fourth of the season down the left-field line in the top of the sixth inning.
Feneis increased his record to 2-0 on the year in throwing five complete innings in the victory. Â The six-foot-five right-hander gave up one earned run on three hits while fanning four on the day. Â
Feneis was relieved by
Belter in the sixth, leading to
Belter's fourth save of the season.
Offensively, Minnesota State was led by
Peterson and
Branstad who each went 2-4 in the game with
Peterson recording one run.
 Dresel, Moffett, and
Hart all went 1-3 in game two on the day with each of them scoring once.
The Mavericks will look to continue upon its winning ways as they wrap up the regular season hosting six games in the up coming week. Â MSU will play a double header against Wayne State College on Wednesday, May 4, starting at 1:30 p.m. at the MSU Baseball Complex in Mankato, Minn. Â They then will play the University of Sioux Falls next weekend, May 6-7, in a four-game series with senior day commencing between games on Sunday.
