Box Score 2 BISMARCK N.D.--- The Minnesota State baseball team picked up two more wins in their 2016 campaign on Saturday as the Mavericks, now 16-9 overall and 7-4 in the NSIC, defeated the Marauders of U-Mary at the Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, N.D.
Maverick starting pitcher, sophomore
Dalton Roach was cruising through game one as he allowed just two runs on one hit in seven innings pitched. The Marauder's lone hit came in the bottom of the seventh inning, ending
Roach's bid at a no-hitter. A Mary batter led the inning off getting hit by a pitch, ending Roach's bid at a perfect game, and stole second base. Two batters later, with one out, the Marauders cut the Maverick lead to 5-2 with a home run to center field, scoring two.
Roach completed the game striking out nine of the 24 batters he faced and increased his record to 3-2 on the season.
Minnesota State's offense got going in the third inning when sophomore
Josh Wenzel brought senior
Kyle Toth in from third on a ground out to short. Freshman
Jordan Hart followed with a single to left to bring in junior
Eric Peterson from third base, taking a 2-0 lead.
The Mavericks took a 4-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning when sophomore
Dylan Dresel led off with an infield single. Sophomore
Luke Waldek followed suit with his second home run of the season over the left-field wall. Minnesota State added one more in the seventh inning when
Peterson belted his third home run of the season to cap of MSU's scoring in game one.
Peterson also collected two more hits in the game, including a triple to go along with his two runs, one batted in and one walk.
Hart finished the game going 2-4 with one batted in while
Waldek and
Dresel each finished the game with two hits.
Sophomore
Brody Rodning also had a good day on the mound for the Mavericks throwing six innings and allowing five runs on seven Marauder hits.
Rodning also came within one strikeout of his persona career-high of 14 in fanning 13 of the batters he faced. With the win,
Rodning also picked up his third victory in increasing his record to 3-1.
Minnesota State tallied their first-two runs in the top of the fourth inning when
Wenzel hit a lead-off triple to center.
Dresel followed two batters later with a sacrifice fly to bring in
Wenzel.
Waldek then came to the plate and knocked his second homer out of the park to left center.
The Marauders responded with four of their own in the bottom of the fifth to grab their first lead of the day. The Mavericks answered U-Mary's challenge with five runs over the next two innings retaking their lead at 7-4.
Hart walked to lead off the sixth for the Mavericks with
Dresel launching his fourth home run of the year to tie the game at 4-4.
Waldek scored on a two-out grounder from
Peterson to end things in the sixth.
Hart then got things going again in the seventh inning when he singled through the left side and later scored on a
Waldek single to left. Senior
Chase Lonetti then put another single through the left side later on to score
Dresel who walked to get on base to take a 7-4 lead over U-Mary.
Mary wouldn't quit as they tacked one more in the bottom of the seventh inning, making their way into the Minnesota State bullpen.
The Mavericks were not done either as they generated another run in the top of the eighth inning taking advantage of a throwing error by the Marauder infield.
Both teams rallied in the last inning with Minnesota State plating four more runs in the top half of the ninth, high-lighted by a two-out bases-loaded triple down the left-field line to score two from
Hart, taking a 12-5 lead. The Marauders threatened with three runs in the bottom half, but was not enough as the Mavericks came away with their 16th victory of the year.
Waldek led the charge offensively for MSU going 4-5 with a home run in the contest with two runs scored and two batted in.
Toth collected three hits in the affair while
Hart and
Lonetti had two hits apiece and
Dresel with three runs batted in.
Minnesota State will play again tomorrow against the University of Mary Marauders at the Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, N.D. Game one is set for a 12:00 p.m. start with the second game slated to follow.
