Minnesota State Offense Shines in Day-One Sweep of Concordia-St. Paul

The Mavericks combined for nine home runs in their two wins over the Golden Bears on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ST. PAUL, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball team had seven different hitters combine for nine homers in their 14-7 and 14-0 wins in St. Paul, Minn., Saturday afternoon.

With the two wins, Minnesota State now sits 21-12 (12-7 NSIC) on the year.

Concordia-St. Paul struck first in game one, pushing one across in the bottom of the second inning.  Minnesota State answered back with four of their own to take the lead in the top half of the third inning.  Freshman Jordan Hart led off with a walk and later scored on sophomore Josh Wenzel's double to left field for Minnesota State's first run.  Junior Hunter Harnisch scored MSU's go ahead run on a wild pitch from third while Wenzel advanced to third.  Wenzel then stole home on junior Eric Peterson's walk.  Senior Taylor Branstad followed with his fifth homer of the season, bringing in Peterson for the 4-1 lead.

The Golden Bears scored the game's next five runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings, retaking the lead at 6-4.  

The Mavericks tacked on thee more in the top of the fifth and five in the top of the sixth highlighted by sophomore Luke Waldek's grand slam and fifth home run of the season, putting the Mavericks up 12-6.  

Minnesota State put two more on the board in the top of the seventh with senior Kyle Toth and Hart scoring the game's last two runs.

On the mound, junior Mitchell Bauer collected his fourth win of the season, moving his record to 4-2 in 2016.  The right-hander have up five-earned runs in four innings pitched on five hits and striking out four.  Senior Peter Gaustad wrapped up the game throwing the last three and giving up one-earned run on two hits and striking out five.

Offensively, the Mavericks were ignited by Waldek who went 2-4, including his grand slam, collecting four runs batted in and scoring one.  Branstad also had four runs batted in  with two scored in his 2-4 performance while Wenzel generated four hits in five at bats  with a double, two runs batted in and three scored.  Toth also added two his the box score with a double and three runs scored.

The Mavericks scored in every inning except for in the top of the third in game two.  

Minnesota State got on the board early and didn't' look back with five runs scored in the first two innings.  In the top of the first, Peterson hit his fourth homer of the year to bring in Toth from third to go up 2-0.  They scored three more in the second frame with sophomore Ryan Moffett hit a solo shot for the first of his career while Toth followed with his third of the season bringing in senior Chase Lonetti.

The Mavericks went on to score nine more runs after their score less third inning.  Every remaining run was scored off of home runs.  Wenzel hit a two-run bomb in the fourth for his third of the season.  Moffett hit his second of the game in the top of the fifth for three more runs.  Hart dropped one over the left-center wall for his fourth on the season and three more runs for the Mavericks in the sixth.  Minnesota State's final run came in the seventh when Toth hit his second one of the game for a final of 14-0.

On the mound, redshirt freshman Jon Ludwig claimed his first win of the season, improving his record to 1-2.  Ludwig tossed all seven in allowing no runs on two Golden-Bear hits in fanning a career-high eight batters.

At the plate.  Toth led the charge going 3-5 with three runs scored and three batted in to go with his two homers.  Moffett followed going 2-4 with two homers four runs batted in and scoring twice.  Hart went 1-4 with three runs batted in and one scored.  Both Peterson and Wenzel got two hits including their homer with two runs batted in and one scored each..

The Mavericks will resume play against the Golden Bears tomorrow afternoon with their double header starting at 12:00 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn.
