Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball team's offense, now 19-12 (10-7 NSIC), shined in the second game of a double header in Fayette, Iowa.
Though game two paused in the fourth inning with an hour-rain delay, Minnesota State's lineup remained consistent all the way through in blasting five homers en route to their 21-3 win.
In game one, Maverick starting pitcher, sophomore
Dalton Roach, looked to set the tone early in the game by collecting three strike outs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Peacocks tallied all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning when
Jake Stenberg led off with a solo homer down the right-field line.
Roach picked up another strike out before giving up a two-run home run to
Jordan Kearns for the Upper Iowa 3-0 lead.
Neither team was able to put another run across the plate in the seven-inning game as
Garrison Becker went the distance in shutting out the Mavericks with five strikeouts and five hits allowed. Â
Roach , now 3-3 on the season, also threw the complete game for Minnesota State in giving up seven hits and fanning eight Peacock batters.Â
At the plate, the Mavericks were led by senior
Kyle Toth and sophomore
Josh Wenzel who knocked two hits apiece.Â
The Mavericks again looked to set the tone in game two, this time offensively. Â In the top of the first,
Toth hit a deep shot to left center to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead with his second home run of the year.
Minnesota State then generated another five in the top of the third, highlighted by a one-out two-run homer from senior
Taylor Branstad and a two-out solo-shot from sophomore
Dylan Dresel. Â The fourth and fifth homers for
Branstad and
Dresel coupled with two other hits, two pass-balls, and three walks accounted for the Maverick's five runs to go up 6-0 after the top of the third frame.
The Peacocks cut the Maverick lead to four in the bottom half of the third scoring two-unearned runs on two hits and taking advantage of a Maverick error, along with two walks to make it a 6-2 ball game.
The Mavericks extended their lead one inning later putting four more up on the board. Â Sophomore
Luke Waldek hit his fourth homer of the year over the center-field fence for two runs batted in while sophomore
Ryan Moffett drilled a single through the left side with runners on second and third to go up 10-2 in the top half of the fourth inning.
Each team pushed one across in the fifth inning while MSU added another five in the top of the sixth inning. Â The Mavericks used three hits in the top half of the inning to secure a 16-3 lead while
Wenzel shot one to left center in the top of the seventh inning for two more runs on the away side.
Wenzel's second homer of the season put the Mavericks up 18-3. Â The Mavericks scored five more taking advantage of a couple of wild pitches and notched four hits in the top of the seventh to cap off game two's scoring..
Maverick's starter, sophomore
Brody Rodning went 3.2 innings before an hour-rain delay hit. Â He finished the fourth inning and went one more full stanza before exiting his five inning, one-earned run, on seven hits allowed and nine strikeout performance in collecting his fourth win on the year and moving to 4-1.
Offensively the Mavericks were charged by a plethora of players up and down the line up.
 Moffett and freshman
Jordan Hart each went 4-5 with three batted in,
Wenzel and
Dresel each collected three hits.
Dresel had four runs scored and three batted in while
Wenzel scored three and batted in two.
Waldek went 2-4 with three runs scored and four batted in while junior
Eric Peterson had four runs scored.
The Mavericks head to St. Paul, Minn., this Saturday and Sunday for a pair of double headers against the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears. Â The games against CSP are scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday.
