Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. --- No. 8 Minnesota State baseball team bounced back from Thursday afternoon's two losses with a 7-5 win over Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., Friday.
With the win, MSU improves to 4-2 on the 2016 season.
The Mavericks got things going right away in the top of the first when senior
Kyle Toth lead-off with an infield single, and advancing to second on a fielder's choice. Senior
Taylor Branstad knocked
Toth in with a single to right, to take the game's first lead at 1-0.
The Eagles answered in the bottom of the second when they strung four hits together along with a fielder's choice and a walk to go up 3-1 after two innings.
MSU responded scoring three of their own in the top half of the third when
Toth and junior
Eric Peterson collected two one-out singles. Sophomore
Dylan Dresel followed with walk. All three base runners advanced on a wild pitch before two Eagle errors allowed
Peterson and
Dresel to score, putting Minnesota State up 4-3.
Dresel then led off the top of the sixth for MSU with a triple to right-center field. Sophomore
Josh Wenzel notched a single to right, scoring
Dresel to give MSU a 5-3 lead. Sophomore
Luke Waldek reached safely on another Eagle error and moving
Wenzel to second. Junior catcher
Hunter Harnisch then loaded the bases when he got hit by a pitch while all three runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Senior
Chase Lonetti helped the Mavericks with one more run as he drove in
Waldek from second with a single down the right-field line to put MSU up 7-3.
The Eagle made a push in the bottom of the seventh inning when
Tobias Moreno lead the inning off with a hit by pitch.
Kyle Zirbes followed with an infield single. Both runners eventually touched home plate when
Josh Garcia to left field to end the ERAU threat and the scoring for the rest of the game.
Maverick starting pitcher, sophomore
Aaron Rozek tossed all but the two-final innings on the day, allowing four earned runs on 10 Eagle hits.
Rozek also fanned six of the batters he faced and walked three as he claimed his first win of the season. Senior reliever
Peter Gaustad cleaned up for the Mavericks in the eighth and ninth innings for his first save of the year.
The Mavericks will resume action in Florida, Saturday afternoon as they take on Ohio Dominican at 3:30 p.m.
