Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball program took game two of their series against Minnesota Duluth 3-2 in extra innings, a game in which MSU played the three-final innings from Monday's second game. The Mavericks came up short in their next two contests vs the Bulldogs, getting beat 4-3 and 13-9.
After Tuesday's action with Minnesota-Duluth, the Mavericks now stand at 10-8 and 1-3 in conference play in 2016 while the Bulldogs now own a record of 10-6 (3-1 NSIC) after the meeting.
Minnesota State and Minnesota-Duluth resumed Monday's second game of the double header in the top of the ninth inning with things deadlocked at two runs apiece. Neither team was able to push a run across until the bottom of the 11th inning when senior
Kyle Toth got things going when he reached on a Bulldog error, making his way all the way to third base. The next two batters were intentionally walked bringing up sophomore
Dylan Dresel.
Dresel belted a single to right center to bring in
Toth for the game winner.
Senior
Dakota Belter picked up his second win (2-0) on the year throwing four innings allowing one earned run on six hits and striking out six.
In the seven-inning game Tuesday afternoon, the Mavericks were bounced 4-3 as UMD used two runs in the top of the seventh to win the ball game.
Though Minnesota State suffered the loss, they took the game's first lead, plating three runs in the bottom of the third inning. The spark began when senior
Chase Lonetti hit a two-out double to right field, followed by
Toth taking one for the team and getting hit by a pitch. Junior
Eric Peterson also wore a pitch that loaded the bases for senior
Taylor Branstad who singled to right to score
Lonetti. Sophomore
Josh Wenzel followed up with a single through the left side scoring
Toth, while
Peterson scored on a mishap-throw by the outfield to make it a 3-0 game.
The Bulldogs went on to score four unanswered runs with on in each of the fifth and sixth innings before taking the game with two in the seventh.
Starting pitcher, sophomore
Aaron Rozek tossed 6.2 innings before being relived.
Rozek gave up 10 hits and four runs in his first loss (2-1) of the 2016 season.
Minnesota-Duluth out hit the Mavericks by a clip of 10-6 in the contest.
In the nine-inning game, UMD pounced on the Maverick pitchers, knocking 19 hits and four home runs including three in the top of the sixth inning.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third where Minnesota State scored their first run when
Branstad drove a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in junior
Hunter Harnisch, who led the inning off with a single to left.
The Bulldogs answered with three more in the top of the fourth when freshman
Jon Ludwig relieved starting pitcher junior
Mitchell Bauer. All three UMD runs were scored on an
Alex Wojciechowski home run, his first of three in the game. Minnesota State countered with one run in the bottom half when
Harnisch sent a sacrifice fly down the right side in foul territory to score
Wenzel from third.
The Bulldogs added four more in the sixth inning, featuring two solo home runs and a two-run shot by
Wojciechowski.
Minnesota-Duluth tallied three more over the last three innings while the Mavericks accounted for five in the last two, but that wasn't enough as the Mavericks suffered their eighth loss of the season by way of 13-9.
Bauer took his first loss (2-1) on the hill this season in three innings of work, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out two batters and walking one.
Offensively, the Mavericks were led by
Branstad (2-4,RBI),
Wenzel (3-4, 2B, 2RBI), and
Lonetti (1-2, R, BB) in game one while
Branstad (2RBI), Wenzel (R), sophomore
Luke Waldek (R), sophomore
Ryan Moffett (2R), and
Lonetti (2B, R, 2RBI) tallied two hits each. Freshman
Jack Mattson and
Harnish each went 1-1 with
Mattson scoring two and adding a walk and
Harnisch with a run and one batted in.
The Mavericks will return to action this weekend as the prepare for Bemidji State at home for a pair of double headers Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5. The first game for both days is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start.
