Box Score 2 MANKATO, Minn.--- The Minnesota State baseball program took a tally in the loss column in their first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in 2016 as they were defeated by a score of 6-2 in the first of two games Monday afternoon at the MSU Baseball Complex on the campus of Minnesota State University.
With the loss, the Mavericks moved to 9-6 on the 2016 season.
Things remained even-keel through the first-four innings of play as both teams pushed just one run across home plate.
Maverick starting pitcher, sophomore
Dalton Roach set an early tone fanning all three -ulldog hitters in the top of the first inning. Minnesota State threatened early placing runners on first and third with one out but nothing came of short-lived spark.
Both Minnesota-Duluth and MSU scored one run in the third as
Alex Wojciechowski crushed a solo homerun to left field in the top-half of the inning while sophomore
Dylan Dresel hit a sacrifice-fly ball to left field, scoring junior
Eric Peterson from third base.
The Bulldogs broke things open in the top of the fifth inning with five runs. With runners on first and second with two outs, the Bulldogs took advantage of a Maverick error pushing one run across followed by a three-run homer from
Jimmy Heck. Minnesota-Duluth strung another three singles together for their final tally of the inning and game, taking a 6-1 lead.
The Mavericks countered with one more in the bottom of the sixth with doubles from sophomore
Ryan Moffett and senior
Kyle Toth to finalize game a 6-2.
The Bulldogs outhit MSU in game-one by a clip of 10-6.
Offensively, the Mavericks were led by
Toth who was 2-4 on the day with a double and one run batted in.
On the hill,
Roach went 4.2 innings striking out eight batters and giving up five earned runs on 10 hits in his second loss of the season (1-2). Juniors
Bailey Scott and
Trevor Patterson each threw an inning each in the predetermined seven-inning game.
In game two, MSU would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning before UMD tied it up in the top of the fourth. Sophomore
Luke Waldek gave Minnesota State a 1-0 lead when he scored from second base on junior
Hunter Harnisch's single up the middle. With the bases loaded in and two outs in the top of the fourth, UMD's
Spencer Diedrich drew a walk from Maverick starting pitcher, sophomore
Brody Rodning, to notch things up at one.
In the bottom half of the inning, MSU regained the lead with freshman
Jordan Hart hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore
Josh Wenzel to make it 2-1.
The Bulldogs tied it two innings later in the top of the sixth when
Diedrich sent a single through the left side to score Jimmy Heck from third.
Rodning went seven complete on the mound fanning six hitters and allowing just one earned run on six Bulldog hits. Leading the way at the plate for the Mavericks in game two is
Waldek who has two hits in four at bats with a run scored while
Wenzel is 1-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored.
After eight-complete innings, the umpires and coaches deemed that the game could no longer be played due to lack of sun light and decided that the remainder of the game would be played tomorrow, Tuesday, March 29 at 12:00 p.m., at the MSU Baseball Complex.
The Mavericks and Bulldogs will then start the regularly scheduled double header following the remainder of Monday's affair.
UPDATE: Upon resumption, Minnesota State scored a run in bottom of the 11th inning to claim the victory. Game story to follow after the scheduled doubleheader later on Tuesday.
