Minnesota State Falls to Bulldogs 5-2 in Mankato Saturday

Quade stops 39 shots in contest

Box Score MANKATO, Minn.  ---  The Minnesota State women's hockey team tallied the game's first marker, but was not able to command a lead after Minnesota Duluth scored two consecutive goals, and three more in the third to come away with their 12th win on the year.

Minnesota State went to take the game's first lead Saturday afternoon at Verizon Wireless Center.  Freshman Emily Antony (Plymouth, Minn.) grabbed a loose puck in the right corner of Minnesota Duluth's end at 6:16 of the first frame.  Antony skated up the sideboards and towards the net, firing a wrist-shot shortside past a screened Bulldog netminder, Kayla Black.  Then, after getting called a for high-sticking infraction, UMD's Michela Cava continued on her offensive surge on the weekend tapping the puck five hole off a Maverick defenseman's stick, past an unsuspecting Maverick goaltender junior Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.).  Cava's short handed goal at 18:49 would close out the scoring in the period with the Bulldogs holding a lead in shots on goal at 11-4.

In the second period, UMD would break the 1-1 stalemate at the 5:14 mark when Lara Stalder found Bulldog's leading scorer Ashleigh Brykaliuk all alone in front to tap in for her 12th of the season.  Sophomore Steph Keryluk (Verona, Wis.) evened things up at the 16:36 mark on the power-play as she knocked in her own rebound for her first collegiate goal, as sophomores Anna Keys (Cottage Grove, Minn.) and Amanda Martin (Peoria, Ariz.) would pick up assists on the play.  Minnesota Duluth would go on into the third period leading in shots on goal at a clip of 22-13.

In the third period, Minnesota Duluth took over as they produced 22 shots in the final stanza to Minnesota State's eight for a total mark of 44-22 in the Bulldogs favor.  At 12:02 of the frame, Brkaliuk notched her second of three goals in the game off of a turnover and making a move to beat Quade stick-side.  Stalder added to Bulldog's to the lead at 16:38 when she ripped a shot from the point on the power play, to capitalize on one of their three man-advantage opportunities.  Brykaliuk produced her third goal of the contest with 12 seconds remaining with and empty-netter, guiding the Bulldogs to their second victory on the weekend.

Quade tallied 39 saves throughout the match adding to her season total, which now comes in a 809.  Minnesota State power play went one-for-three on the day while blocking 16 shots as a whole compared to UMD's 11.

Minnesota State travels to Madison, Wis., next weekend to play the No. 2 Badgers for their final road series of the 2015-16 regular season.  Puck drop for next Saturday and Sunday will commence at 2:07 p.m. at LaBahn Arena.
