Box Score MADISON, Wis. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team played with the Badgers up until the third period hit, only down 2-1 after the first 40-minutes.
Sunday's matchup marked Minnesota State's last road game of the regular season.
Though the Badgers grabbed the 1-0 lead in the first period, the frame played out fairly evenly in front of the sold-out crowd of 2,273 patrons at LaBahn Arena. A little over half way through the first, Courtney Burke pounced on a loose puck in front of Minnesota State netminder, junior
Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.). At 11:40, Burke backhanded the puck with a change-up like speed past a screened Quade to capture a 1-0 lead. By the time the horn blew, sounding the end of the period, Wisconsin had tallied eight shots on net while Minnesota State challenged Badger goaltender, Ann-Renee Desbiens with five of their own.
Senior
Katie Johnson (Anoka, Minn.) got things going for Minnesota State in the second period as UW was called for an interference infraction at 4:03. On the power play, sophomore
Amanda Conway (Naperville, Ill.) passed the puck up to junior
Anna Fiegert(Landshut, Germany) from the sideboards and dished it over to Johnson for the shot. Johnson threaded a snapshot threw a few legs and into the back of the net for her fifth of the season. The Badgers regained the lead at 15:39 of the period on the man advantage when Quade was forced out of position to make a save from the point, kicking a rebound to her left. Emily Clark picked up the loose puck and found space between Quade and the pipe to put Wisconsin up 2-1, ending the period's scoring.
The Badgers took over in the third period, scoring six goal to put the game out of hand, including three goals in a span of one minutes and 28 seconds in first five minutes of the period.
Minnesota State was outshot by a clip of 57-12 in the contest while capitalizing on one of its four power-play chances.
The Mavericks close out the regular season next weekend as they host No. 6 Bemidji State in Mankato for a Friday and Saturday series. Friday's game is scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. at Verizon Wireless Center.
