Box Score GRAND FORKS, N. D. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team played their way to a 2-1 loss Friday Night against a now 14-8-3 (11-7-3-1) North Dakota. Friday night's game marked the sixth one-goal game in the last ten that Minnesota State has played.
The first period during the evening contest featured an even playing field as both squads were unable to put the puck past their opposing goalie. Minnesota State goaltender, junior
Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.) stopped all six of UND's shots while Fighting Hawk netminder, Shelby Amsley-Benzie harnessed all five Maverick shots on net.
North Dakota took the game's first lead at 7:30 of the second frame on their only power-play opportunity. After a faceoff won by UND in Minnesota State's end, a shot from Jordan Hampton at the point was blocked initially by a Maverick forward and inadvertently made its way past the glove-side of Quade and into the back of the net.
Minnesota State evened things up on the man advantage at 9:35 of the third stanza. UND was called for a boarding infraction at the 8:44 mark and junior
Savannah Quandt (Mankato, Minn.) feathered home her second goal of the season when she caught a pass from senior
Katie Johnson (Anoka, Minn.) on the right side of the offensive zone and backhanded the puck past Amsley-Benzie to tie the game a 1-1. Just 37 seconds later, North Dakota answered back at 10:02 when Layla Marvin capitalized on a faceoff win in Minnesota State's end and tapped home her own rebound. Assisting on what proved to be the game-winning goal was Amy Menke and Megan Dufault.
Quade tallied up 36 saves in the match while opposite of her, Amsley-Benzie stopped 16 of 17 Maverick shots on goal. Both teams were able to capitalize on the man advantage as Minnesota State went one-for-two while UND was one-for-one on the night.
Minnesota State wraps up the road series in Grand Forks tomorrow afternoon with puck drop commencing at 4:07 p.m. at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
