Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- Minnesota State tallied two third period goals, but was not enough as they dropped the first game in their series at Minnesota by way of 3-2.
The first period in Saturday's matchup saw a gritty performance by Minnesota State's defensemen and goaltender, junior
Brianna Quade (Newcastle, Ont.) which led to a scoreless first 20 minutes. Quade flashed the leather a few times throughout the first period of play, having stopped a couple of odd-man rushes and a breakaway attempt by Gopher forward Caitlin Reilly. The period ended with No. 3 Minnesota claiming an advantage in shots on goal at a clip of 11-5, while the Mavericks generated six blocked shots.
In the second, Minnesota capitalized on the man-advantage twice, ultimately taking a three goal lead into the third period. At he the 6:49 mark, Minnesota went on their first power-play of the afternoon. Just 25 seconds later, Minnesota State was called for another infraction giving the Gophers a five-on-three opportunity. At the 8:36 mark, the Gophers put pressure on, collapsing their offensive zone as Kelly Pannek found the back of the net. Then, 25 seconds later, Minnesota generated their second power-play goal of the afternoon as Dani Cameranesi darted down the left side of Minnesota State's zone and across the crease, beating Quade on her left side. The Gophers would go on to score one more, finalizing the end of the period at 3-0.
The third period saw two Maverick goals in the last 20-minute span. With 10:04 remaining in the third frame, freshman
Jordan McLaughlin (Grand Rapids, Minn.) won a draw back to sophomore
Anna Keys (Cottage Grove, Minn.) who snapped a shot. Keys' shot was blocked at the top of the circle and fluttered its way towards the net, over Minnesota netminder, Amanda Leveille. Then, with 2:09 remaining, sophomore
Lindsey Coleman (Burnsville, Minn.) grabbed a pass from freshman
Emily Antony (Plymouth, Minn.) in the offensive and ripped a shot past the glove of Leveille.
By the end of the contest, Minnesota had outshot Minnesota State at a hand of 35-25 with Quade stopping 32.
Minnesota State will wrap up its series with Minnesota tomorrow afternoon in Minneapolis. Puck drop is slated for 2:07 p.m. at Ridder Arena.
