LAKE CITY, Minn. --- For the third time in four events, the Minnesota State women's golf team claimed a team title.
This week, the Mavericks turned in a 302-290—592 (+24) en route to winning the Watkins Invitational held at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn. Freshman
Claire Schweim led the way for the Mavericks with a one-over 69-74—143, which was good for second place. Schweim finished her two rounds with five birdies.
The Mavericks narrowly edged Winona State, which finished second with a 26-over par, 297-297—594. Concordia finished third with a 69-over par 320-317—637. Winona State's Carly Moon was the medalist with a 67-71—138, which was four-under par.
"I'm super proud of the perseverance through the weather and our women continuing to give themselves opportunities to make birdies," said Director of Golf
Alex Schmitz. "We have a great group of women who never give up!"
All four Mavericks who contributed to the team score finished inside the top-ten. Junior
Kelly Winter was fourth with a five-over par 76-71—147, thanks in part to four birdies, while sophomore
Sammy Youngqist shot a 75-73—148 to finish tied for fifth. Youngquist added four birdies as well. Seniors
Anna Cihak and
Sam Soulier shot matching 77-77—154s which was good for a tie for ninth place. Cihak recorded four birdies in her two rounds, while Soulier tallied three.
Sophomore
Ava Olson shot an 88-79—162, good for 22
nd place and fellow sophomore
Lauren Rebrovich turned in an 81-81—162 with three birdies good for a tie for 23
rd. Freshman
Victoria Woytassek shot a 78-84—162 with two birdies to finish tied for 23
rd as well.
Minnesota State returns to action next week as it travels to the SMSU Mustang Invitational in Marshall, Minn.
