#15 Minnesota State Looks to Jump #12 St. Cloud State in WCHA Showdown

2/14/2023 4:27:00 PM

Minnesota State knocked off the Beavers 3-2 and 4-0 to set up a highly anticipated weekend series in St. Cloud. Alexa Berg notched her 4th career shutout swinging her to sixth all-time shutouts in only 16 career starts.
Due Up:
Minnesota State travels north to St. Cloud State this weekend to take on the Huskies. The two-game set marks the 102nd and 103rd time the two teams have matched up in program history. St. Cloud state (16-16-1, 9-16-1 WCHA) sits tied for fifth with Minnesota State with 30 points in the WCHA standings.
Last Time Out:
Minnesota State earned all six points last weekend after sweeping Bemidji State. The Mavericks got the scoring started early courtesy of junior forward Madison Mashuga's ripper past the BSU goaltender.
MSU let the lead slip in the second period despite the Mavericks outshooting the Beavers 18-13 through 40 minutes of play.
Just over three minutes into the third period, senior forward Kelsey King danced through a pair of BSU defenders capitalizing on her opportunity.
The Mavericks took the lead off Madison Mashuga's second goal of the night and ninth goal of the year.
Lauren Barbro locked down the net stopping 19-of-21 and earning her seventh win on the season moving her to seventh in all-time wins as a Maverick.
Minnesota State locked down Bemidji State limiting its shots to only 14 throughout the tilt for the Beavers.
Sophomore defender Shelbi Guttormson cracked the board for the Mavericks just a minute into the second period with her fourth of the season.
Just three minutes following the Guttormson goal, Minnesota State found the back of the net twice in 17 seconds. Senior forwards Kennedy Bobyck and Brooke Bryant lit the lamp for their fifth and sixth goals on the year, respectively, to give the MSU a three-goal cushion.
Senior forward Kelsy King wrapped up the scoring onslaught at the 11:27 mark of the second period with her team-leading 13th goal on the year.
King moved into second in all-time goals as a Maverick eclipsing former linemate Brittyn Fleming (2017-22) with 45 career goals.
Senior goaltender Alexa Berg earned her fourth shutout on the season and her second in as many weeks to slide into seventh in all-time shutouts. Berg stopped all 32 shots she faced leaving her with a 7-7-1 overall record.
Taking on SCSU:
The Huskies lead the all-time series 47-41-13 against the Mavericks. The Huskies offense is led by senior Jenniina Nyland who has accumulated 27 points in 33 games.
In goal, SCSU relies on its platoon of juniors Sanni Ahola and Jojo Chobak who have both registered over 15 starts this season. The pair owns a 2.43 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage.
