Box Score MAPLE GROVE, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women's hockey team suffered a 4-1 nonconference loss to St. Thomas Thursday evening in front of a sellout crowd of 1,314 fans at the Maple Grove Ice Arena.
The game was played as part of a celebration of hockey hosted by the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
"We had some power play chances earlier in the game that we got to take advantage of," said head coach
John Harrington. "Later in the game, giving up two late power play goals, it took the wind out of sails. We're looking forward to a chance to get back on the ice after the weekend off next week at Bemidji."
The Mavericks jumped on the board at the 12:15 mark of the first when junior defenseman
Shelbi Guttormson got loose on a breakaway and beat St. Thomas goaltender
Calla Frank on the blocker side off the post for her first goal of the season. Senior
Kennedy Bobyck picked up the assist, her second of the season.
St. Thomas scored a pair of unanswered goals at the 6:19 and 9:45 mark of the second period to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission. Rylee Bartz added a power play goal at the 12:15 mark of the third to give the Tommies some insurance. St. Thomas added another power play goal in the game's waning moments.
Minnesota State (2-9-0) returns to action next weekend as it travels to Bemidji State for a league series against the Beavers.
