Mankato, Minn.--- Minnesota State swept its series with UST as
Alexa Berg grabbed her second shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory in Mendota Heights, extending its winning streak to five.
Due Up:
Minnesota State is staring down a determined Minnesota club who was handed its third loss of the season to #5 Yale last weekend. The Maverick will be riding into their showdown with the Gophers on their longest winning streak since 2006 when the Mavericks finished 16-17-2 .
Last Time Out:
Minnesota State continued to roll against St. Thomas as they earned its second sweep in as many weeks for the first time this season, beating the Tommies 3-1 and 2-0. The last time the Mavericks accomplished back-to-back sweeps occurred last season against the Tommies and Huskies last season (Dec. 3- Dec.11).
Minnesota State own the weekend from the first period as they came ready to play against the Tommies.
Taylor Otremba continued her dominate season has she posed a goal in both games earning her the
WCHA Rookie of the Week award for the second time this season.
Jamie Nelson and
Shelbi Guttormson continued to play key roles in the Mavericks success as both picked up goals in Friday's affair while
Lauren Barbro picked up her third win on the season.
In part two of the home-and-home, the Tommies looked to change the momentum as they outshot the Mavericks 21-16 heading into the third period. It took Otremba and
Claire Butorac to send the Mavericks home extending its historic winning streak. Minnesota State will look to work off its momentum as it gets set for a tough battle at Minnesota on Friday at 6:00p.m.
Taking on Minnesota:
Minnesota State is looking for its fifth win against the gophers as it comes in with a 4-100-3 head-to-head record. Minnesota slots in second in the WCHA standings with a 9-1-2 conference record and 10-3-2 overall record.
The Gophers offense is led by seniors
Taylor Heise (8-11--19) and
Grace Zumwinkel (9-11--20) who are team leaders in goals, assists and points. In goal, the Gophers lean on sophomore
Skylar Vetter who has started 13 games for Minnesota while accumulating 735 minutes in net this season. Vetter owns a 2.45 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage.
