Due Up:
Minnesota State will look to continue its newfound energy as the Mavericks travel to Bemidji to take on the Beavers. MSU will kick off the weekend against BSU on Friday at 3:00 pm and wrap up on Saturday with another 3:00p.m. puck-drop. The Mavericks will look to continue to hold BSU at the bottom of the WCHA standings.
Last Time Out:
MSU came into last weekend looking for its first victory on the season against UST. The Tommies new the Mavericks were to play determined and matched MSU's energy. UST grabbed one goal on the weekend, but it was the first goal of the series at the 13:11 mark of the first period. The Mavericks found themselves down early until
Kennedy Bobyck ripped a shot passed the UST goaltender to even the score on the power-play. The Mavericks would continue to add insurance in the second and third period off
Shelbi Guttormson and
Kinna Roekes first goal of her collegiate career.
Alex Berg was asked to make 11 saves, doing so to ensure her first win as a Maverick.
Minnesota State traveled to St. Thomas for the second game of the weekend and was met with resounding pressure for two periods. At the end of the second intermission, the Mavericks only tallied seven more shots than UST with a 17-10 advantage. Minnesota State started the third period with more fire and regained its momentum after a
Brooke Bryant one-timer from
Clarie Butorac just 2:57 into the new period.
Kelsey King took full advantage of the momentum swing as she went coast-to-coast finishing off the UST goaltender with a fantastic deke.
Lauren Barbo stopped all 15 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory.
Taking on Bemidji:
In 97 previous matchups between the Mavericks and the Beavers, MSU holds a 37-46-14 record in all-time matchups. In the most recent matchup on February, 23rd Minnesota State knocked off the Beavers in Mankato handing BSU a 5-0 loss. Minnesota state owned the pace-of-play for the beginning requiring BSU goaltender Hannah Hogernson to come up with big-time saves. At the start of the second period,
Alexis Paddington broke through giving the Mavericks a lead they would not give up. The Mavericks peppered the BSU net scoring two more in the second period and two power-play goals in the third period.
BSU owned an 11-20-3 overall record last season with an 8-18-2 mark in league games. Bemidji fell to the bottom half of the WCHA standings with a .321-win percentage. MSU owned a .381 winning percentage in league games while checking in at fifth in the standings
