Minnesota State Prepares for Final Series; Hitting the Road to take on #7 Minnesota Duluth Saturday and Sunday

Setting the Table 

Minnesota State (7-10-1, 7-10-1 WCHA) travels to #7 Minnesota Duluth (8-4-0, 8-4-0 WCHA) for its final games of the regular season this weekend with Western Collegiate Hockey Association action taking place at AMSOIL Arena Saturday and Sunday at 3:07 p.m. CST.


Minnesota State All-Time

Minnesota State, which began play in 1998-99, is in its 23rd season of competition and has compiled a 203-513-71 (.258) record in 787 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 22nd year as members in the WCHA and hold a 108-406-56 (.189) record in 570 conference games played. 


Facing Minnesota Duluth

The Mavericks hold an all-time record of 10-75-9 against the Bulldogs. In a Nov. 20-21 series in Mankato earlier this season, the Mavericks fell victim of a sweep by the Bulldogs in 5-0 and 7-3 decisions to open the campaign.


King's Throne

Sophomore forward Kelsey King, who has 8-5--13 in 18 games this season, has paced the Mavericks with nine points in her last eight games. The Elk River, Minn., native leads MSU's shooting effort with 73 shots this season. In the nation, King ranks fourth in shots on net and third in the WCHA. In MSU's last action Feb. 5-6 at St. Cloud State, King led MSU with 11 shots on net in the series.


Freshman Phenom

With a 6-7--13 line this season, freshman forward Jamie Nelson leads the WCHA rookie scoring race this season. Last time out, Nelson assisted on a pair of MSU goals in the 4-2 win at St. Cloud State on Feb. 6. The multi-point afternoon put her back in a tie with King as MSU's leading scorer. With six goals on 49 shots this season, Nelson leads the Mavericks in shooting percentage (.122) .


Lucky No. 13

Junior forward Madison Oelkers helped the Mavericks claim a 4-2 victory over St. Cloud State with a pair of assists on Feb. 6. The Warroad, Minn., native finished the weekend with a team-high +2 rating in the series vs. the Huskies.


In Truax We Trust

Leading Minnesota State's defensive point race with a 2-4--6 line in 15 games this season is Tristen Truax. She got the scoring started with a power play goal at the end of the end first period that led the Mavericks over SCSU, Feb. 6. Truax has blocked 33 shots this season, good for fifth-best in the WCHA.


The Captain

Minnesota State defenseman Anna Wilgren is third in the WCHA and seventh in the NCAA among shot blockers this season with a team-high 38 blocks in 16 games. The Hudson, Wis., native owns a 1-4--5 line this season.


Fleming Finesses

Senior forward Brittyn Fleming is Minnesota State's active career scoring leader with 23-45--68 in 124 games as a Maverick. With one more assist last game against St. Cloud State on Feb. 6, the Oregon, Wis., native now shares a lead in Maverick playmaking with seven assists this season. Fleming is seventh on MSU's list of all-time assist leaders with 45 career helpers.


To be Frank...

Goaltender Calla Frank was recently named one of 21 nominees for the Hockey Commissioner's Association Women's Hockey Goalie of the Year Award watch list. In MSU's last series Feb. 5-6, Frank started both games and stopped 27 of the 29 shots in the second game to backstop the Mavericks to a 4-2 win over SCSU. The Hugo, Minn., native holds a 6-8-1 record, .909 save pct. and 2.57 goals against average.


Minnesota State's Special Teams

The Mavericks have the eighth-best penalty kill unit in the nation this season at a 54-for-60 mark for a 90% success rate. With the man advantage, the Mavericks are 13th in the NCAA going 9-for-57 (.158). MSU's power play unit stands second in the WCHA while the penalty kill comes in at third in the conference rankings.


The Senior Class

Minnesota State is graduating five seniors this season. They are forwards Mariah Gardner, Taylor Gulenchyn and Fleming as well as defensemen Jessica Kondas and Truax. In 124 games, the MSU senior class has a record of 32-77-15 with 59 goals and 80 assists for 139 points.
