MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State Mavericks women's hockey team continues play this week with another Western Collegiate Hockey Association Thursday-Friday series at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center. It will mark the season's first meeting between the Mavericks (1-5-0, 1-5-0 WCHA) and Bemidji State Beavers (1-1-0, 1-1-0 WCHA).
Minnesota State All-Time
Minnesota State, which began play in 1998-99, is in its 23rd season of competition and has compiled a 197-508-70 (.254) record in 775 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 22nd year as members in the WCHA and hold a 102-401-55 (.183) record in 558 games played.Â
Scouting Bemidji State
Bemidji State, currently tied with Minnesota State for fifth in the WCHA, just concluded its first action of the season. The Beavers split a pair of 3-2 overtime decisions with St. Cloud State last weekend. SCSU handed BSU an overtime loss in game one before taking its first win on the 2020-21 campaign in game two. BSU is returning Clair DeGeorge, a 22-point scorer from a season ago. Last weekend, the senior forward had a goal and an assist Thursday before following it up with a pair of goals Friday, for a four-point opening series.
Facing the Beavers
The Mavericks hold an all-time record of 30-45-12 against the Beavers. At home, Minnesota State is 16-23-4 all-time against Bemidji State. Last season, MSU went 0-3-1 in four games vs. the Beavers. MSU earned the extra point in the WCHA standings, claiming a win in the 3-on-3 overtime, Jan. 24.
Mighty Fine Freshmen
Freshmen forwards Jamie Nelson and Sydney Langseth each had a point against #3 Minnesota last Thursday. Langseth tallied her second goal of the season off an assist from Nelson to bring the Mavericks within one of the Gophers, 2-1, in the second period. Nelson and Langseth each hold 2-2--4 lines this season and lead MSU in points.
Fleming Finishes
Senior forward Brittyn Fleming scored her first goal of the season and 20th of her career in Minnesota State's 2-1 loss to #3 Minnesota last Friday. Fleming leads the Mavericks in shooting percentage (.143) and career scoring with 59 points.
How About Them Apples?
Junior forward Brooke Bryant leads the Mavericks in the assists department with three helpers. Bryant assisted on Fleming's goal in Friday's 2-1 loss at #3 Minnesota.
Back to Blocking
After finishing last season fourth in the nation amongst shot-blocking company with 96 blocks, junior defenseman Anna Wilgren leads the nation with 17 blocked shots after posting nine blocks against third-ranked Minnesota, Dec. 10-11.
Setting the Barbro
Freshman goaltender Lauren Barbro (0-2-0) made her first career starts Dec. 10-11 against #3 Minnesota. The Loudonville, N.Y., native stopped 52-of-59 shots and for a 3.54 goals against average and .881 save percentage in two games.
To be Frank...
Sophomore goaltender Calla Frank (1-3) stopped 32-of-35 shots, including 21 saves to secure the Mavericks' first win of the season, 4-2, against St. Cloud State, Nov. 28. That weekend (Nov. 27-28), Frank allowed three goals and boasted a .914 save percentage.
Looking Ahead
Minnesota State awaits a second-half schedule announcement from the WCHA that could feature games as soon as Jan. 1.
