Mavericks Will Face Northern State and Upper Iowa in NSIC Battles

What's on Tap: Minnesota State will face Northern State at Bowyer Field, but will be a road series due to the site reversal. Games will be on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. The Mavericks will then host Upper Iowa in a four-game set on Saturday and Sunday. Doubleheaders will be played both days at 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m.

Last Time on the Diamond: Minnesota State went 4-1 last week with a mid-week series split against Minnesota Duluth with UMD winning 10-6 then MSU winning 17-4 in six innings due to weather. The Mavericks then swept the weekend series against U-Mary, winning 6-0, 11-2 and 12-4.

The Long Ball: The Mavericks hit 10 home runs in the five games this past weekend. Junior infielder Ty Buck led the way with four home runs, including a grand slam in game three against U-Mary. Senior outfielder Jordan Hart had three to add to his all-time leading total with all three coming last Tuesday against Minnesota Duluth. Sophomore right-handed pitcher/outfielder Cam Kline hit his first two home runs of the season against the Bulldogs. Freshman infielder Nick Altermatt launched his second career home run against U-Mary.

All-Time RBI Leader: Along with being the all-time leader in home runs at Minnesota State, Hart is now in second all-time in runs batted in at MSU. The current leader Nolan Johnson (2012-15) had 168 RBI in his career and Hart currently is nine off the pace at 159 RBI. Hart has 44 RBI so far this season, which leads the NSIC.

Two-Way Player: Kline had a great week on the mound and at the plate for the Mavericks. In his one start on the week, Kline threw his second consecutive complete game shutout, while allowing five hits, one walk and striking out eight. Mostly serving as a designated hitter, Kline hit .667 at the plate in four games. Out of his eight hits, three were doubles and two were home runs as he drove in 11 runs, while scoring five himself.

Scouting Northern State: The Wolves currently sit with a 13-14 record including being eighth in the NSIC with a 8-8 mark. Most recently, NSU swept Concordia-St. Paul in a three game series 2-0, 1-0 and 12-0, while not giving up a run. As a team, the Wolves are hitting .255, slugging .374 with 59 extra base hits and have an on-base percentage of .343 through 27 games. As a pitching staff, NSU has a 5.61 earned-run average with 180 strikeouts and allowing 97 walks.

Junior catcher Hayden Houts leads the way offensively by batting .351 with five doubles, two triples, four home runs and 28 RBI. Senior right-hander Luke Chevalier (3-3) has made six starts for the pitching staff and sits with a 3.00 ERA. In 39.0 innings of work, he has 39 strikeouts and 11 walks.

Facing Northern State: MSU leads the all-time series versus NSU with a 24-5 record. The last time the two teams faced off was April 19 last season where the Mavericks split the doubleheader with the Wolves, winning 5-4 and then losing 2-0.

Scouting Upper Iowa: The Peacocks currently sit with an 8-15 record and are 13th in the NSIC standings at 5-13. UIU lost two of three against Minnesota Crookston, winning the first 10-8 and dropping the next two 5-0 and 6-5. As a team, the Peacocks are hitting .285 with 60 extra base hits, including 42 doubles. The pitching staff holds a 6.65 ERA with 159 strikeouts and 130 walks.

Senior infielder Zackary Cain leads the team with a .426 batting average with 25 runs, nine doubles, two home runs and 14 RBI in 23 games played. Junior right-hander Duncan Snider (1-3) has started six games and has pitched 32.2 innings, holding a 3.31 ERA, with 46 strikeouts and 17 walks.

Facing Upper Iowa: MSU leads the all-time series over U-Mary 30-10. Last season, the Mavericks lost three of four to the Peacocks, dropping the first two 5-3 and 7-5, winning one 10-4 and losing the final game 9-7.

Up Next: Minnesota State is scheduled to continue NSIC play with a three-game weekend series against Wayne State. A doubleheader will begin at Bowyer Field on April 19 at 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m., with a single game following on April 20 at 12:00 p.m.
