Mavericks Finish 2018-19 Regular Season against Minnesota Duluth

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey will play its last regular season series against Minnesota Duluth at Verizon Center. Games will be played on Friday and Saturday with the puck being dropped at 7:07 p.m., and 3:07 p.m., respectively, with senior day recognition preceding the game Saturday.
 
Minnesota State All-Time: The MSU women's hockey program, which started in 1998-99, is currently in its 21st season of competition and has compiled a 185-481-62 (.297) record in 728 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 20th year as members in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and hold a 114-383-49 (.254) in 546 games played.

Last Time on the Ice: Minnesota State (9-17-5, 3-16-3-2 WCHA) was swept at #1 Minnesota, 3-1 and 3-2 in overtime, last Friday and Saturday in Ridder Arena.

The Gophers jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period in the game on Friday. Freshmen Abigail Boreen and Crystalyn Hengler scored at the 6:21 and 14:46 mark in the period. Minnesota added a power play goal in the second period by freshman Amy Potomak at the 9:59 mark. The Mavericks got on the board 20 seconds into the third period by junior Sofia Poinar. Sophomore Brittyn Fleming skated below the red line and passed the puck to the front of the net for Poinar's first goal of the season.

The Gophers scored first again in the second game 3:24 into the first period with senior Nicole Schammel scoring. Minnesota State responded with a power play goal by senior Rebekah Kolstad for her ninth goal this season at the 16:23 mark. Freshman Brooke Bryant passed across the ice to find Kolstad by the left face-off circle as she hit a one-timer past the Gopher netminder. The Mavericks took the lead at the 7:58 mark in the second period as Bryant gathered a loose puck in the neutral zone. She then skated past the blueline and took a slap shot that was partially blocked by the defender and went through the goaltender's legs for here ninth goal of the season. MSU held the 2-1 lead until the 10:40 mark in the third period as junior Sarah Potomak tied the game up for UM. The game eventually went into overtime and Minnesota sophomore Taylor Wente scored off a rebound at the 1:27 mark.

In net, freshman Abigail Levy (9-16-5) made both starts on the weekend. Levy collected 75 saves, had a 2.98 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. She made 36 saves in the first game and 39 saves in the second game.
 
Scouting Minnesota Duluth: The Bulldogs (13-15-2, 9-11-2-2 WCHA) were swept by #2 Wisconsin this past weekend losing 6-1 and 3-0. Minnesota Duluth currently sits in fifth in the WCHA standings, one point behind Bemidji State for fourth.

The UMD offense features freshman Gabby Hughes who leads the team in points, goals and assists (15-15--30). Sophomore Naomi Rogge has also chipped in with 11 goals and 22 points (11-11--22).

In net, Minnesota Duluth features junior Maddie Rooney (10-14-2). Rooney holds a 2.75 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and has 896 saves so far this season with one shutout.

Facing Minnesota Duluth: All-time, the Mavericks are 7-70-5 against the Bulldogs, dating back to 1999. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 6 in the Minnesota Cup where UMD came back  from a two goal deficit in the third period to defeat MSU 5-3.
 
Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will hit the road for the first round of the WCHA tournament with the opponent to be determined.
