Wilgren and King Named WCHA Players of the Week

Bloomington, Minn. --- Minnesota State sophomore Anna Wilgren was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defenseman of the Week and freshman Kelsey King was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week for their outstanding performance in the non-conference series sweep against Merrimack, as announced by officials Tuesday afternoon.

Hailing from Hudson, Wis., Wilgren recorded five points on two goals and three assists over the weekend and had a +4 plus/minus rating. She posted a career-high four-point game in the game two win, which is tied for second-most points in a game in Minnesota State history. Wilgren gave the Mavericks the 2-1 lead at the 8:07 mark in the first period of game two after beating the goaltender to her stick side. Wilgren then scored the game-winning goal later in game two after going top shelf. Wilgren collected one assist in game one on sophomore Brooke Bryant's short-handed goal and then two more in game two on sophomore Claire Butorac's and King's goals. The two goals and two assists were also single-game career-high marks for Wilgren to go along with the four points. Her two goals and three assists for five points during the series led all WCHA defenseman on the weekend. Wilgren also led all NCAA blueliners in goals and points, while being second in assists on the weekend. Now leading Minnesota State defenseman in scoring with three goals and five assists for eight points on the season, Wilgren has the sixth-most points among WCHA defenseman this season. Wilgren also had three blocked shots on the weekend and now totals 37 on the season, which in second in the NCAA. Wilgren scored the lone game-winning among WCHA defenseman over the weekend and is tied for the most on the season with two.

Hailing from Elk River, Minn., King scored two goals and recorded three assists for five points over the weekend and had a +6 plus/minus rating. King scored her first career collegiate goal in game one and recorded a career-high three points in game two. King's first career goal came in game one at the 7:49 mark in the third period, going top shelf from the right dot. King also assisted on junior Mariah Gardner's game-winning goal in game one. King recorded two more assists in game two on both of Wilgren's goals, including the game-winning goal, along with scoring an empty net goal in the third period. King led all WCHA rookies in goals, assists, points and plus/minus on the weekend. King also tied for the most assists and points in all of the WCHA and had the best plus/minus rating on the weekend. Among NCAA rookies, King tied for the most points and had the best plus/minus rating over the weekend. On the season, King has the most assists (nine), points (11) and shots on goal (40) among WCHA rookies and is also tied for the second most goals (two). King has the second-most assists, third-most shots on goal and fourth-most points among NCAA rookies.

This is Wilgren's second consecutive week receiving a WCHA Defenseman of the Week award and is the fourth time overall. King has now been named WCHA Rookie of the week twice this season, with the previous coming after the first weekend of play.

Minnesota State has an idle weekend coming up before heading to Madison, Wis., to face the #2 Badgers on Nov. 16-17.
