Mavericks Travel to St. Cloud State and then Bemidji State for Hockey Day

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey will travel to two different spots this weekend for games. On Friday, the Mavericks will be in St. Cloud, Minn., to take on the Huskies at 3:07 p.m. MSU will then face Bemidji State on Hockey Day in Minnesota on Saturday in an outdoor game beginning at 1:07 p.m. The game against Bemidji State will be televised on Fox Sports North.
 
Minnesota State All-Time: The MSU women's hockey program, which started in 1998-99, is currently in its 21st season of competition and has compiled a 184-474-61 (.298) record in 719 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 20th year as members in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and hold a 114-376-48 (.257) in 538 games played.

Last Time on the Ice: Minnesota State (8-10-4, 3-9-2-1 WCHA) was swept by #2 Minnesota at Verizon Center this past weekend. The Gophers won 5-1 on Friday and then 6-3 on Saturday and the Mavericks have dropped five of their last seven games.

On Friday, Minnesota jumped out to an early 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. The Gophers were able to add to their lead in the second and third periods to make the score 4-0 before the Mavericks could answer. At the 7:31 mark in the third period, freshman Brooke Bryant scored the only goal for Minnesota State as she and junior Emily Antony completed the two-on-one break opportunity. Minnesota added another one late to make the final score 5-1.

The Mavericks put up more of a fight on Saturday against the Gophers. After allowing two goals in the last three minutes of the first period and another early in the second, MSU was able to cut into the lead to make the score 3-2. The first goal came on a power play when senior Jordan McLaughlin took advantage and put in a rebound off the initial save. Bryant then scored her second goal on the weekend after poking the puck from under the pads of the Gophers goaltender. Minnesota scored two more goals with one coming at the end of the second period and then on a power play in the third. The Mavericks cut into the lead again to make it 5-3 after sophomore Brittyn Fleming completed the three-on-two break with Antony and senior Megan Hinze. Minnesota was able to get the last laugh again as it scored its sixth and final goal of the game to make the score 6-3.

In net, freshman Abigail Levy (8-10-4) started both games for the Mavericks against the Gophers collecting 56 saves on 67 opportunities. Levy ended the weekend with a .836 save percentage and allowing 11 goals. 

50-Point Plateau: Senior Corbin Boyd (13-37--50) is the 19th student-athlete to collect 50 points in her career with Minnesota State women's hockey. She accomplished the feat against #2 Minnesota on Jan. 12 when she recorded an assist against the Gophers. So far this season, Boyd leads the team in points, goals and assists with a 6-10--16 stat line. Hannah Davidson (23-31--54), who graduated last year, was the last Maverick to hit the 50-point mark for her career, which happened against Lindenwood on Dec. 9, 2017.

Scouting St. Cloud State: The Huskies (7-16-2, 2-12-0-0 WCHA) were the only WCHA team off this past weekend. They last played in the Minnesota Cup when they tied 2-2 and won in a shootout 1-0 against the Mavericks and then lost 5-1 to the Gophers.

The Huskies offense features senior Julia Tylke who leads the team in points and is second in goals this season (8-9--17). Junior Hallie Theodosopoulos leads the team in goals scored so far (9-4--13). 

In net, St. Cloud State features junior Janine Adler (3-10-1) and sophomore Emma Polusny (4-6-1) who split time. Between the two of them they hold a 2.96 goals-against average, a .926 save percentage and have 937 saves so far this season with one shutout.

Facing St. Cloud State: All-time, the Mavericks are 33-39-13 against the Huskies, dating back to 1998. The last time the two teams met was at the Minnesota Cup where the game ended in a 2-2 tie and SCSU advanced on the 1-0 shootout win.

Scouting Bemidji State: The Beavers (8-14-1, 5-8-1-0 WCHA) split a home series with Minnesota Duluth this past weekend. BSU won 4-1 on Friday and then UMD won 5-2 on Saturday.

The Beavers offense features sophomore Claire DeGeorge who leads the team in points, goals and assists this season (7-8--15). Senior Emily Bergland has also chipped in and is second on the team in points (4-7--11). 

In net, Bemidji State features sophomores Lauren Bench (4-7-1) and Kerigan Dowhy (4-7-0) who split time. Between the two of them they hold a 2.67 goals-against average, a .906 save percentage and have 568 saves so far this season with four shutouts.

Facing Bemidji State: All-time, the Mavericks are 29-40-11 against the Beavers., dating back to 1998. The last time the two teams met Oct. 26-27 in Bemidji, Minn., where the Mavericks won the first game 4-1 and then tied 0-0 in the second game and won in the shootout 2-1.

Looking Ahead: Minnesota State will be back at Verizon Center for a WCHA series against Bemidji State. The games will start at 7:07 p.m., on Jan 25 and 3:07 p.m., on Jan. 26.
