Mankato, Minn.--- The Minnesota State women's hockey team won its exhibition game against the University of British Columbia Saturday at Verizon Center, outscoring the visiting Thunderbirds 2-0.
 
The Mavericks outshot UBC 14-13 in the period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Mavericks were unable to take advantage of three power play opportunities and the Thunderbirds also squandered their only opportunity.
 
The Mavericks got rolling in the second frame, scoring early with the first goal coming thirty seconds into the period. Senior alternate captain Jordan McLaughlin scored an unassisted goal by collecting the puck along the right boards before moving to the middle of the zone and firing a wrist shot that beat netminder Tory Micklash from thirty feet out to put Minnesota State up 1-0. The Mavericks were able to score on its next power play opportunity when freshman Brooke Bryant's shot from the blue line bounced off a UBC shin pad before entering the goal. The assists on that goal went to freshman Anna Wilgren and McLaughlin. The Mavericks outshot the Thunderbirds 22-14 in the period.
 
The third period was much like the first with a free flow and not a lot of stoppage. The Thunderbirds outshot the Mavericks 20-12 in the period, but freshman Abigail Levy was able to make all of the saves on 12 opportunities.
 
In total, the Thunderbirds outshot the Mavericks 24-20. Junior Chloe Crosby, senior Katie Bidulka and Levy combining for the shutout. The Thunderbirds' Micklash was able to make 18 saves on 20 opportunities.
 
Minnesota State was able to convert on one power play opportunity going 1-of-5 and British Columbia went 0-of-4.
 
The three stars of the game included Wilgren receiving the third star, Bryant receiving the second star and McLaughlin, on the game-winning goal and an assist, named the first star.

The Mavericks start their regular season when they host Rensselaer Sept. 29^th-30^th in Mankato, Minn., with both games beginning at 2:07 p.m.
