Mavericks Take on #1 Badgers at Verizon Center

MANKATO, Minn. --- Minnesota State women's hockey returns to Verizon Center for a weekend series against #1 Wisconsin. The series will start on Friday at 6:07 p.m. The series concludes on Saturday at 2:07 p.m., and will be televised on Fox Sports North.

Minnesota State All-Time: The MSU women's hockey program, started in 1998-99. is currently in its 21st season of competition and has compiled a 180-467-58 (.296) record in 705 total games played. The Mavericks are in their 20th year as members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and hold a 113-370-47 (.258) in 530 games played.

Last Time on the Ice: Minnesota State (4-3-1, 2-3-1-1 WCHA) went on the road and went 1-0-1 against Bemidji State on Oct. 26-27. The Mavericks won 4-1 on the 26th and tied 0-0 in overtime, then won the shootout 2-1 on the 27th.

The Mavericks came back once again from a 1-0 deficit after the first period before winning last Friday's contest 4-1. Senior Corbin Boyd scored off a save rebound from the Beaver's netminder to even the score at one with less than 1:30 to play in the second period. Senior Rebekah Kolstad scored the game-winning goal from a 2-on-1 break with senior Jordan McLaughlin. Kolstad and sophomore Mariah Gardner scored empty net goals with under two minutes to play in the third period to cap off the 4-1 win.

On Saturday, it was a goaltending dual between freshman Abigail Levy and the Beaver's Lauren Bench. The game ended in a 0-0 tie after overtime, forcing a shootout. Levy made three save on four attempts in the shootout as the Mavericks won it 2-1. Juniors Sofia Poinar and Emily Antony both scored in the shootout.

In net, Levy started both games for the Mavericks, collecting a win and tie. Levy has started in all eight games this season and collected her second shutout of the season in the 0-0 tie. On the weekend, Levy made 55 saves on 56 opportunities, garnered a 0.48 goals-against average and have a save percentage of .982. Levy was also honored with the WCHA Goaltender of the Week for the second time this season.

Scouting Wisconsin: The #1 Badgers (9-1-0, 3-1-0-0 WCHA) split a home series with the #2 Gophers last weekend. UW lost 1-0 last Friday and won 4-1 last Saturday. This was the first time the Badgers lost at home since Dec. 3, 2016, when they lost 2-0, also against the Gophers.

The Badgers offense features junior Abby Roque, who leads UW with 14  points this season (5-9--14). Freshman Sophie Shirley leads the way in goals for Wisconsin with six. 

In net, the Badgers feature junior Kristen Campbell, who has started all 10 games this season. Campbell holds a 1.35 goals against average,  a .925 save percentage and has 160 saves so far this season. She has collected one shutout and has earned a WCHA Goaltender of the Week honor this season.

Facing Wisconsin: All-time, the Mavericks are 2-82-3 against the Badgers. The last time the two teams met was Jan. 13-14, 2018 when UW won both games 6-0 and 4-0 in Madison Wis.

Looking Ahead: The Mavericks will have a week off before traveling to Moon Township, Pa. On Nov. 16, the Mavericks will take on Robert Morris in a nonconference matchup at 6:00 p.m. (ET) and on Nov. 17, the game will begin at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
