Mavericks Head Back on Road to Face Peacocks and Warriors

MANKATO, Minn. --- The Minnesota State men's basketball team wraps up its regular season road schedule this weekend as it takes on the Upper Iowa Peacocks on Friday, before facing the Winona State Warriors on Saturday. Game times are set for 8:00 p.m., and 6:00 p.m., respectively.

Minnesota State History: The 2016-17 season marks the 95th campaign as a varsity sport for Minnesota State men's basketball. The Mavericks are 1,308-876 (.598) in 2,184 games since the program's inception in the 1920-21 season. MSU capped its 33rd and final season as a member of the NCC in 2008 and owned a 283-267 (.515) record in 550 league games played. In the NSIC, MSU owns a 137-53 (.721) record to go with four regular-season championships and two tournament championships.

The Mavericks made their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season. MSU owns a 16-13 record (.551) in NCAA Tournament play, including an 85-81 win over MSU Moorhead and an 82-60 loss to Northwest Missouri State in the most recent trip to the tournament.

About Our Last Outings: Minnesota State has now won four straight games after defeating Minnesota Duluth (56-51) and St. Cloud State (79-62) at Taylor Center last weekend. MSU has also won eight of its last 10 games.

Against UMD, sophomore Joey Witthus led MSU with 16 points, while senior Jon Fuqua added seven points and a career-high 12 rebounds. As a team, Minnesota State shot 41.5% from the field against the Bulldogs. It also held a 35-31 advantage in rebounds and recorded five blocks.

Against SCSU, Fuqua recorded a team-high 25 points as he connected on 10-of-12 shots from the field. Senior Aarias Austin tallied 16 points and a season-high nine rebounds, while junior Charlie Brown notched 11 points off the bench. Witthus finished with eight points and 10 rebounds as well.

As a team, the Mavericks shot 49.2% from the field against the Huskies, as they limited SCSU to just 62 points and a 36.2% shooting percentage. MSU also recorded a season-high eight blocks.

Against the Peacocks: Friday's meeting between Minnesota State and Upper Iowa marks their 22nd all-time meeting, with MSU owning a 19-2 all-time record against the Peacocks. UIU defeated MSU 82-77 earlier this season.

Junior Charlie Brown recorded a game-high 17 points in their previous meeting, while senior Aarias Austin added 16 points and three assists. Senior Jon Fuqua record 10 points and seven rebounds as well.

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 19-2 overall record against the Peacocks, including a 9-0 record on the road. 

Against the Warriors: Saturday's encounter between Minnesota State and Winona State marks their 133rd all-time meeting, with MSU owning an 85-47 all-time record against the Warriors. WSU has won the last two meetings, including an 89-64 win earlier this season.

Senior Jon Fuqua recorded 16 points and four rebounds against Winona State earlier this season, while senior Aarias Austin notched 13 points. 

Head Coach Matt Margenthaler owns a 13-18 record against Winona State, including a 5-9 record on the road

Concerning the Mavericks: Minnesota State owns a 17-7 overall record, including a 12-6 NSIC record. MSU has now won four straight games, including wins vs. Minnesota Duluth (56-51) and St. Cloud State (79-62) at Taylor Center last weekend. 

As a team, Minnesota State is averaging 79.1 points and 36.1 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 47.4% from the field. MSU has also passed out 313 assists and has tallied 89 blocks.

Senior Jon Fuqua is averaging a team-leading 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season, with Joey Witthus following right behind with 15.4 points and 5.0 rebounds a game. Senior Aarias Austin is adding 11.1 points and 3.2 assists per game as well.

Matt Margenthaler is in his 16th season as head coach of the Mavericks and currently owns a 347-140 (.712) overall record, to go along with 11 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Concerning the Peacocks: Upper Iowa enters the weekend the owner of a 16-8 overall record, including a 13-5 NSIC record. UIU is on a two-game losing skid, with road losses coming against Northern State (83-72) and MSU Moorhead (93-85) last weekend.
 
As a team, the Peacocks are averaging 80.3 points and 33.6 rebounds a game this season. They are also shooting 47.9% from the field and have forced 336 turnovers.

UIU has five players averaging 10 or more points a game this season, including Jordan Hay who is boasting 12.3 points and 6.4 rebounds a game. Jimmy Roth is averaging 12.1 points a game as well, with Carson Parker adding 11.5 points and 4.0 assists a game.

The Peacocks are coached by Brooks McKowen who is in his fourth season at Upper Iowa. He owns a 65-52 overall record.

Concerning the Warriors: Winona State enters the weekend the owner of a 10-12 overall record, including a 7-11 NSIC record. Last weekend, WSU lost to both MSU Moorhead (85-63) and Northern State (85-58) on the road.

The Warriors are averaging 73.1 points and 34.1 rebounds a game this season. They are also shooting 47.4% from the field and have passed out 342 assists.

Riley Bambenek is averaging a team-leading 15.1 points a game this season. Tommy Gathje is averaging 11.0 points and a team-leading 4.9 rebounds a game this season as well.

The Warriors are coached by Tom Eisner, who is in his second season at Winona State. He owns a 26-25 overall record at WSU.
