SIOUX FALLS, S.D. --- Minnesota State (21-11, 13-9 NSIC) snagged a 79-72 win over Southwest Minnesota State (16-12, 14-8 NSIC) Sunday in the second round of the NSIC Tournament at the Sanford Pentagon. The Mavericks took full advantage of their free-throw opportunities, sinking 15-of-18, while the Mustangs missed their only shot from the line.
The Mavericks kicked things off with a bang, as junior
Traijan Sain opened with a layup and quickly added another basket, setting the tone early. Minnesota State kept the pressure on with sharp shooting, including three-pointers from junior
Arhman Lewis and senior
Malcolm Jones, stretching their lead. This game marked the 13th time this season MSU hit double digits in three-pointers.
In the first half, the Mavericks came out firing, hitting 57% from the field, including six 3-pointers, to build a commanding 40-26 lead. They owned the boards with an 18-6 rebounding edge and blocked five shots, shutting down the Mustangs' paint presence. Despite seven turnovers, MSU made the most of their second chances, scoring nine points off offensive rebounds. Impressively, they've snagged at least 11 offensive rebounds in seven straight games.
The second half kicked off with more Maverick momentum as Lewis nailed a 3-pointer just 16 seconds in. Jones then grabbed a steal, and Sain capitalized on the possession with a free throw, widening the gap. MSU kept their foot on the gas as junior
Caden Kirkman snagged a defensive rebound, leading to a layup by Jones, pushing the score to 48-28. Kirkman has consistently delivered, scoring four or more field goals in four consecutive games.
As the half went on, the Mavericks kept extending their lead through sharp shooting, with a 3-pointer from freshman
Colton Benson and a fastbreak 3 from
Carson Schweim. The defense held strong with key rebounds and a block from Kirkman, maintaining control despite the Mustangs' attempts to rally. Jones continued his rebounding streak, grabbing seven or more boards in five straight games.
Down the stretch, the Mavericks managed their lead with clutch free-throw shooting, particularly from Benson, who nailed crucial shots from the line. Despite a late surge from Southwest Minnesota State, including a couple of 3-pointers by Mekhi Shaw, MSU held firm for the 79-72 win.
Even though the Mustangs outscored MSU 46-39 in the second half, the Mavericks' proficiency at the free-throw line, converting 13-of-16, helped offset their 11 turnovers. Defensively, MSU forced eight turnovers, scoring at pivotal moments.
Lewis led the charge with 17 points and six assists, marking his second consecutive game with at least six assists. Sain chipped in 17 points, hitting six field goals. Kirkman added 13 points and was a defensive force with four blocks. Jones contributed 12 points, seven rebounds, and two steals.
For the Mustangs, Jakob Braaten scored 16 points and handed out eight assists, both team highs. Mekhi Shaw matched him with 16 points, including 2 of 5 from deep. Aeron Stevens added 15 points and three steals on defense. Micah Schlaak blocked two shots while Mason Lund added three steals and scored 10 points.
With the win, Minnesota State advances to the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament on Monday where it will take on St. Cloud State. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon.
