Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Minnesota State outlasted St. Cloud State, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-18, 25-21), Friday evening at Taylor Center in front of 312 fans.
Minnesota State found themselves in a early three point, 4-1, hole to begin the match. The Mavericks then responded with three straight points highlighted by a
Krista Hassing kill to steal the lead, 5-4. Minnesota State did not surrender the edge and went on to win the first frame, 25-22.
St. Cloud State was able to regroup in the second set and built a 13-8 advantage at the midway point. The Mavericks battled back to deadlock the game at 19 following a
Sydney Powell kill. The Huskies then closed the frame on a 6-2 run to steal the set, 25-21.
Following intermission, Minnesota State was able to create a 14-8 advantage and force St. Cloud State to burn a time out. The Mavericks swelled the lead up to 11, 20-9, after a Huskies attack error. Minnesota State went on to close out the fourth set, 25-18.
In the fourth and final set which featured 10 ties both teams traded points to lock the set at 10. The teams continued to exchange points to tie the set at 20. Minnesota State then began to take control of the frame after a
Nevena Vukomanovich ace and forced St. Cloud State into a time out. The Mavericks would not look back and went on a 3-1 run to close out the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-1.
Freshman
Morgan Olson led the Mavericks with a career-high 20 kills while Powell added 10 kills. Sophomore
Autumn Risch contributed a match-high 44 assists and Senior
Haley Fogarty notched a team-best 21 digs to round out the top performers.
The Mavericks held the edge in kills (52-46), assists (51-46), and digs (58-56). Additionally, Minnesota State posted 15 blocks.
With the win, Minnesota State moves to 9-5 (3-3 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will take on No. 2 Minnesota Duluth tomorrow at Taylor Center with first serve set for 4:00 p.m.
