Box Score 2 St. Joseph, Mo. --- Minnesota State closed the weekend picking up back-to-back wins over Missouri S&T, 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20, 15-8). In the final match of day, the Mavericks swept Missouri Western State, 3-0 ( 25-20, 25-19, 31-29) on Saturday afternoon.
Minnesota State got off to slow start in set one finding themselves deadlocked with Missouri S&T at 10. The teams exchanged points until the Miners began to take control and opened up a three point, 21-18, advantage and would not look back winning the set, 25-21.
Minnesota State rebounded in the second set to snatch a 14-11 edge and use the momentum to win the second frame, 25-21. Missouri S&T battled the Mavericks late into the third set to tie the game at 19. MSU was able to hold off the late Miner push to win the frame, 25-20.
In the fourth set, the Miners jumped out to a quick 12-9 lead and forcing the Mavericks to burn a time out. The Mavericks fought their way back to tie the set at 19 but it would not be enough as Missouri S&T held on to win, 25-20.
In the fifth and final set, the Mavericks grew a quick 7-3 edge to force the Miners to use a time out. Minnesota State did not surrender the lead as it took control and cruised to a 15-8 victory.
Senior
Krista Hassing led the Mavericks with a match-high 28 kills while Senior
Sydney Geisness added 14 kills. Sophomore
Autumn Risch posted a match-best 59 assists while
Haley Fogarty also added a match-high 30 digs.
In the final match of the day against Missouri Western State, the teams traded points in the early moments before Minnesota State began to take control opening up a two point, 18-16, lead after a kill by Geisness. The Mavericks were able to close out the frame and take set one, 25-20.
In set two, the Griffons jumped out to a quick, 7-3 , advantage. The Mavericks battled back to tie the game at 11 after a Hassing kill. Minnesota State was able to slowly take control of match creating a two point, 20-17, edge late in the frame to force Missouri Western State to take a time out. The Mavericks would not surrender the lead and went on to win the second frame, 25-19.
In the third and final set, both teams battled trading points throughout the frame to a late 24-24 deadlock. A kill by Geisness gave the Mavericks a one point edge, 25-24, to force a Griffon time out. Both teams continued to battle to tie the game at 29 after a Griffon kill. The Mavericks would seal the victory with kill from Powell and then a service ace by freshman
Morgan Olson to win the set, 31-29.
Geisness lead the Mavericks with at team-high 14 kills and Powell contributed 11 kills. Freshman Sarah Kuehn posted a match-best five blocks while Risch notched a match-high 37 digs. Hassing and Fogarty were also named to the all-tournament team.
With the win, Minnesota State moves to 6-2 (0-0 NSIC) on the season. The Mavericks will return to the floor on Sept. 15 to take on Winona State to open conference play with first serve set for 7:00 p.m.
