Box Score 2 Golden, Colo. – The Minnesota State volleyball team took care of business on day two of the Oredigger Volleyball Classic, as it swept both #20 Northwest Nazarene and Pace University [N.Y.].
In the first match of the day, MSU got some revenge on #20 Northwest Nazarene after being swept by the Crusaders last season in Golden, Colo. The Mavericks showed off a well balanced attack and outperformed the Crusaders both offensively and defensively.
The Purple and Gold posted a .355 hitting percentage on 93 attempts, 15 total blocks and six service aces, while NNU tallied just a .055 hitting percentage, four total blocks and zero service aces.
Five Maverick players collected six or more kills and three Mavericks had at least six or more total blocks in the match.
Junior middle blocker
Lexi Platz [Lafayette, Minn.] led MSU with 12 kills to go along with a .333 hitting percentage. Middle blocker
Krista Hassing [Blue Earth, Minn.] and outside hitter
Sydney Geisness [St. Croix Falls, Wis.] each posted nine kills, while Hassing added six total blocks and Geisness collected three of her own.
Junior middle blocker
Courtney Anderson [Tripoli, Iowa] recorded seven kills, a .417 hitting percentage and led the team with eight block assists. Senior setter
Ellie Van De Steeg [Hutchinson, Minn.] did a little bit of everything as she recorded a match-high 33 assists, while also tallying six kills, four digs, two service aces and two block assists.
Junior libero
Haley Fogarty [Belle Plaine, Minn.] posted a match-high 16 digs, while sophomore middle blocker
Vikolia Meade [Solon, Iowa] tallied seven block assists.
In the final match of the day it was all Mavericks over Pace with final scores in each set being, 25-14, 25-15 and 25-16.
The Purple and Gold posted an outstanding .436 hitting percentage and recorded nine service aces in the sweep, while the Setters accumulated a .063 hitting percentage and just two service aces.
MSU's offensive attack was led by Hassing, as she posted a career-high 23 kills, to go along with a .656 hitting percentage. Van De Steeg added a match-high 37 assists, while Fogarty collected 10 digs and led the team with three service aces.
Anderson tallied six kills with a .556 hitting percentage, while Geisness wasn't too far away with five kills and .500 hitting percentage. Defensive specialists
Rissi McNallan [Andover, Minn.] and
Maddie Keute [Grand Rapids, Minn.] each recorded two services in the win as well.
With the two wins, MSU starts its season 4-0 on the year.
The Mavericks return to action on Friday Sept. 11, as they will travel to Romeoville, Ill. to take part in the Lewis University volleyball tournament. MSU will take on Maryville and Malone on Friday, before squaring off with Ohio Dominican and Lewis (Ill.) next Saturday.
