ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Minnesota State volleyball team (4-11, 2-5 NSIC) lost to No. 5 Concordia-St. Paul (11-3, 6-1 NSIC) 3-0 on Tuesday, falling 13-25, 13-25, 22-25 at Gangelhoff Center. The Mavericks finished with 28 kills and a .143 hitting percentage, while the Golden Bears had 44 kills and hit .370.
Jadyn Lester finished with 20 assists, 11 digs and four service aces. She surpassed her season average of 1.69 service aces.
Avery Klein led the Mavericks with six kills and added four digs.
Emily Clausen recorded three kills on five attacks while hitting .600 and added two block assists.
Kyla Klein converted her lone attack for a kill and added six digs and a service ace.
SET ONE
Lester opened the first set with a service ace, and the Mavericks traded early points with the Golden Bears through a 6-6 tie after
Addison Foor's ace and an Audrey Waterman kill. CSP moved in front from there, taking an 8-7 lead and then scoring eight straight points to make it 16-7 behind Mavericks attack errors, Mehlayna Straub kills and a Waterman ace.
Avery Rosenberg and
Avery Klein added kills for the Mavericks, but the Golden Bears pushed the margin to 21-9 with a Marta Leeland ace and a Kaelyn Snoozy kill.
Olivia Sturgis put down consecutive late kills for the Mavericks after CSP reached set point, but Snoozy closed the set with a kill for a 25-13 Concordia-St. Paul win.
SET TWO
The Mavericks answered the Golden Bears' first two points with kills from
Avery Klein and
Lily Riese, and a
Kyla Klein service ace later put the Mavericks ahead 5-4 in the second set. The teams continued trading points until CSP moved from a 7-7 tie to a 9-7 lead, and after Sturgis cut it to 9-8, the Golden Bears scored five straight behind kills from Julia Gordon and Mehlayna Straub, a Kelsey Cooper ace and two Mavericks attack errors. Sturgis, Riese and Foor added kills as the Mavericks tried to stay within reach, but the Golden Bears stretched the margin to 21-13. The Golden Bears closed with the final four points, getting a Kaelyn Snoozy kill, two Snoozy service aces and Gordon's final kill to take the set 25-13.
SET THREE
Lester opened the third set with back-to-back service aces, and the Mavericks stayed in front early before the Golden Bears tied it at 5-5. The Mavericks moved ahead 12-9 on a kill by
Avery Klein and another Lester ace, then pushed the margin to 17-13 after a Clausen and Sturgis block and a Golden Bears attack error. CSP pulled even at 20-20, and after
Kyla Klein put the Mavericks back ahead 21-20, the Golden Bears scored the next three points to take a 23-21 lead.
Avery Klein's kill brought the Mavericks within 23-22, but CSP answered with consecutive kills to close the set 25-22.
