MANKATO, Minn. -- The Minnesota State volleyball team (4-10, 2-4 NSIC) swept Winona State (2-10, 1-5 NSIC) 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-20) on Saturday at Taylor Center. MSU hit .285 and finished with advantages of 6-2 in aces and 7-1 in blocks.
Avery Rosenberg led the Mavericks with 11 kills, hit .417 and added two blocks
. Jadyn Lester finished with 31 assists, four digs, two blocks and an ace.
Olivia Sturgis recorded five blocks and added six kills.
Addison Foor posted 10 kills, 10 digs and an ace.
"This was a good win," said Head Coach
Corey Phelps. "We served well enough to keep them out of system most of the match, which was huge. Our passing was solid all match which is another huge key.
Avery Rosenberg was fantastic today offensively, and
Avery Klein was formidable as always. Jadyn did a great job putting hitters in good situations which we were able to capitalize on. We have another big test on Tuesday in St. Paul. We are looking forward to the challenge."
SET ONE
The Mavericks moved in front 7-5 in the opening set after kills by Foor and
Lily Riese and a Foor service ace, but the Warriors kept the score tight and later went ahead 11-10 on a Gracie Clary kill. Rosenberg tied it with a kill, and after the teams reached 12-12, MSU scored three straight on a Sturgis kill, an
Avery Klein ace, and a Winona State bad set to take a 15-12 lead. Winona State cut the margin to 15-14, but the Mavericks answered with points from a service error, a Sturgis kill, and Foor kill to go up 18-14, then held off the visitors as Rosenberg, Foor and Klein added late kills. An Abby Ongna attack error brought MSU to set point at 24-20, and Foor finished the set with a kill for a 25-20 win.
SET TWO
After Winona State moved ahead 6-3 in the second set, MSU scored five straight points, using two Foor kills and a Sturgis kill to go in front 8-6. The Warriors came back to tie the set at 8-8 and later led 11-9, but MSU answered with a 7-0 run, with Riese and Rosenberg supplying kills during
Savannah Meyer's service turn for a 16-11 lead. Winona State trimmed the margin to 17-16 before the Mavericks pushed back with back-to-back Rosenberg kills and consecutive
Kyla Klein service aces to move ahead 21-16. Winona State got as close as 21-19, but MSU reached set point at 24-20 and closed the set 25-21 on Foor kill from
Avery Klein.
SET THREE
Winona State used four straight points, including three Zoe Haan kills and a Hailee Peters ace, to move ahead 12-8 in the third set. After Winona State later led 16-13, Minnesota State won seven of the next eight rallies behind kills from Foor, Sturgis and Lester and blocks involving Sturgis and Lester to take a 20-17 lead. The Warriors cut the margin to 21-20, but MSU closed the set with four straight points, getting a Rosenberg kill, a block by Riese and Rosenberg, an
Avery Klein kill, and a Lester ace to finish a 25-20 win.
