#6 Mavericks Take to Winona State Before Hosting Upper Iowa in Final Weekend of Regular Season

Minnesota State is currently riding a 12-game unbeaten streak and will look to continue that trend vs. Winona State and Upper Iowa

What's on Tap: No. 6 Minnesota State has not lost a match in the last 12 games. The Mavericks did tie the Beavers of Minot State 1-1 and went into overtime with Minnesota Duluth for three and a half minutes before solidifying a W. MSU will look to continue its winning ways as it travels to Winona, Minn., this Friday to play Winona State before returning home on Sunday to match up against the Peacocks of Upper Iowa. Friday's contest will be played under the lights at 6:00 p.m. while Sunday's game in Mankato is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.

A Look Back at Last Week: The sixth-rated Mavericks generated a weekend-series sweep at home on October 23 and 25., The two wins came against Northern Sum opponents Minnesota Duluth in a 1-0 overtime game and against St. Cloud State in a 3-2 come from behind win.

Senior forward Jessica Bowe (Anoka, Minn.) scored her second goal of the year in the 94th minute of the match against the UMD Bulldogs. Fellow senior Emily Erickson (Woodbury, Minn.) served up a ball that Bowe was able to bounce past the Bulldog goalkeeper for Minnesota State's 10th shutout of the season. Two days later against St. Cloud State, the Mavericks came from behind and scored twice in the 70th and 72nd minutes to win 3-2. Senior Korey Kronforst (Cary, Ill.) tallied her 12th and 13th goals on the year, including the game-winning strike that was assisted by Erickson. Freshman Julia Zach (Oconomowoc, Wis.) scored her fourth goal of the season to tie the game before Kronforst finished things off.

Last Time Losses: Under head coach Brian Bahl, Minnesota State has compiled an astounding record of 53-5-3. Minnesota State's one loss this season came early on when MSU matched up with the defending National Camp Grand Valley State in a 2-1 game. The Mavericks last L at home was in the second round of the NCAA Tournament when they met up with Southwest Minnesota State in Mankato on November 17, 2013 in a 2-1 match. That game vs. SMSU also marked the last time MSU lost a match vs. a NSIC opponent, and the last time MSU lost a game at home vs. a NSIC team. All of those marks mentioned about that game were in post season action. Even earlier than that is when MSU lost their last regular season game to a NSIC opponent Winona State in a 1-0 shutout on November 3, 2013. Dating back further, almost exactly five years ago, on October 31, 2010, was the last time Minnesota State lost a regular-season-home game against a NSIC opponent. The loss came against Bemidji State in a 1-0 fashion under then head coach Peter McGahey. The Mavericks will look to keep that five-year streak alive as they host Upper Iowa this Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

Scouting the Warriors: Winona State comes into the weekend boasting a record of 11-3-2 overall and are 8-3-2 in league play. WSU came away with four points last weekend in a scoreless tie with Bemidji State and beating Minnesota Crookston 2-0.

The Warriors are led by head coach Ali Omar who is in his 20th year guiding WSU. Freshman Abby Bohanski leads WSU in scoring with 19 points tallying seven goals and five assists. Senior Kati Baker follows Bohanski with 11 points including five goals and one assist. Sophomore Rachel Oleson has started every match in goal and has produced 10 shutouts boasting a save percentage of .848 while having a goals against average of .60. WSU is outscoring its opponents 19-10, averaging 1.19 goals per game. They are averaging 18.2 shots per game while allowing only 8.5.

Inside the MSU vs. WSU Series: The Warriors hold the edge over the Mavericks in a series that dates back to 1995. MSU is 10-14-0 against WSU. Minnesota State defeated the Warriors in all three matches they played in the 2014, producing a shutout in each victory.

Scouting the Peacocks: The Peacocks own an overall record of 7-7-2 and are 6-6-1 in the NSIC. UIU comes off of a weekend in which they were swept by Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State. The Peacocks lost to UMC 2-0 and to the BSU 1-0.

Laith Zuraikat enters his second season as the women's soccer assistant coach prior after joining the staff prior to the start of the 2013 season. Zuraikat was named the Interim Head Coach for the time being. Senior Maddie Edwards leads the Peacocks with 14 goals and 29 points. Zuraikat will be looked upon a key contributor in the matchup. Redshirt senior Kaitlyn Emanuel owns a record of 6-6-2 and has a goals against average of 1.06. She has produced four shutouts and has a save percentage of .852. The Peacocks are giving up just 1.12 goals a game while averaging 1.38 goals a game. They have been outshot by their opponents 112-123 and are being led by their opponents in corner kicks by a clip of 92-64.

Inside the MSU vs. UIU Series: MSU owns a 5-1-2 record over the Peacocks. The Mavericks beat UIU twice last season by a scores of 4-1 and 1-0 with Kronforst netting a hattrick in the first match up.

Program History: The 2015 season marks the 21st year of women's soccer as a varsity sport at Minnesota State. MSU claimed its third-straight NSIC regular-season championship, last year after capturing NCC regular-season crowns in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2007. The Mavericks currently hold a 274-111-28 (.697) all-time record and 79-11-8 (.847) all-time mark in six seasons in the NSIC. MSU has posted 17 consecutive winning seasons dating back to 1998.

Between the Pipes: Senior goalkeeper Lauren Hoeppner (Lakeville, Minn.) has played 26 games in her career as a Maverick. Within the 26 matches the Lakeville, Minn., native holds a 17-1-2 record with 11 shutouts and a .47 goals against average in her career. Hoeppner also garnered NSIC Goalkeeper of the Week accolades Sept. 28th, 2015 Hoeppner now owns a record of 14-1-1 on the season, allowing just eight goals over the 16 game stretch.

Within Reach: After her 12th and 13th goals of the year this past weekend vs. St. Cloud State, Korey Kronforst is now two goals away from tying the All-Time NSIC record for goals. Also, after scoring the goals vs. St. Cloud State, Kronforst moves to within four points of the All-Time NSIC record for points vs. Northern Sun competition. Maureen Stormont (UMD 2011-14) recorded 44 goals and 102 points to establish the record. Currently, Kronforst has scored 42 goals and 98 points against NSIC opponents.

Climbing the Ranks: Minnesota State is ranked 6th in the ninth edition of the regular season NSCAA poll after sustaining the, #6 spot from the last installment, Oct. 20th.

The Road Ahead: #6 Minnesota State will open up post-season play after this weekend's matches next Wednesday. With one win this week, the Mavericks will claim the first seed in the NSIC Tournament, and with two wins this weekend the Mavericks will claim their fourth-consecutive regular-season NSIC championship.
