Box Score 2 MAUSTON, Wis. --- Fourth-ranked Minnesota State picked up a pair of tight victories to sweep a four-game series with Minnesota Duluth and extend its winning streak to six games in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Monday afternoon at the Woodside Sports Complex.
Â
The sweep elevates the Mavericks to 19-4 overall and 7-1 in league play, while the Bulldogs fall to 4-12 on the season and 0-8 within the conference. MSU claimed game one, 3-1, before earning a 8-7 victory in the second contest.
Â
After three scoreless frames, junior
Connor McCallum (Shoreview, Minn.) put the Mavericks up 1-0 in the first affair with a RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. One inning later senior
Parker Sullivan (Rapid City, S.D.) tagged a two-run double stretching the MSU advantage to three.
Â
UMD pushed across a run on a single by freshman
Matt Vogt in the top of the sixth to break senior righthander
T.J. Larson's (Prior Lake, Minn.) shutout bid and slice the MSU lead to 3-1. However, senior righthander
Chris Williams (Omaha, Neb.) shut the door in the top of the seventh to record his fifth save to date.
Â
Larson improved to 3-1 after striking out a season-high 10 batters and allowing seven hits and one earned run over 6.0 innings of work.
Â
Game two saw Minnesota State score in each of the first three innings to claim a 3-1 lead a third of the way through as Sullivan and McCallum drove in runs in the second and third innings, respectively.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, MSU exploded for four runs after a two-run single by junior
Max Waletich (Fairmont, Minn.) and a two-run home run from senior
Stetson Olson (Renton, Wash.), his fourth of the year. But Minnesota Duluth fired right back with four runs of its own in the top of the fifth keyed by a three-run four-bagger off the bat of senior
Cody Aasen trimming the MSU lead to 7-5.
Â
That score held until the Bulldogs knotted the game at 7-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth on a MSU balk and sacrifice fly, but Olson countered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI groundout to second base scoring Sullivan from third and producing a 8-7 Maverick edge that junior
Matt Geislinger (Watkins, Minn.) would not relinquish.
Â
Geislinger earned his first victory as a Maverick by firing 1.2 frames of scoreless relief and striking out four. Senior righthander
Taylor Nawrocki (Fairmont, Minn.) received a no-decision after fanning seven with seven hits and five earned runs over five innings.
Â
For the day, McCallum ended four-for-five (.800) with a double and two RBI, while Sullivan went four-of-seven with a double, two runs and three RBI. Standish finished three-of-seven with a team-high three runs, while Olson was one-of-six and produced two runs and three RBI.
The Mavericks are scheduled to continue conference competition Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader at Upper Iowa. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
