Box Score MANKATO, Minn. --- The No. 1 ranked Minnesota State soccer team used a strong second half performance to defeat Wayne State 7-0 Saturday afternoon at The Pitch. It was a total team effort as MSU had six different players find the back of the net.
With the win the Mavericks continue their historic run and improve to 13-0-0 on the season and 10-0-0 in the NSIC while the Wildcats drop to 1-11-1 and 0-10-0 on the league circuit.
The Mavericks were on the offensive attack the whole match and started their scoring at the 10 minute mark. The Mavericks took a shot from outside the box and the ball bounced around a few defenders and right by the feet of sophomore
Kiana Nickel
who scored her fifth goal of the season to put MSU up 1-0. MSU would strike one more time in the first half as sophomore
Rebecca Pederson
dribbled down the left side and found junior
Jessica Bowe
wide open on the right side for Bowe's fifth score of the year.
In the second half senior
Emily Moris
passed the ball to sophomore
Dana Savino
in the middle of the field from 20 yards out and Savino kicked a rocket past WSC goalkeeper Kylie Comba. Moris would add a goal of her own off a long towering pass from junior
Emily Erickson
pushing the Maverick lead to 4-0.
Just twenty seconds after Moris scored her third goal of the season, Nickel added her second goal of the game in the 54th minute off a pass from Pederson. Freshman
Caitlin Foley
scored her first career goal in a Maverick uniform in the 75th minute while freshman
Lexi Pszanka
marked her second goal of the season in the final seconds. Redshirt freshman
Laura Schwickerath
had both of the assists on the final two goals for the Mavericks.
Senior
Molly McGough
was not tested on the afternoon and improves her record to 11-0-0 on the season.
The Mavericks outshot the Wildcats 30-2 totallying 13 shots on goal and did not allow any corner kicks while having 11 of their own.
The Mavericks will be in action tomorrow afternoon at The Pitch as they battle No. 22 Wayne State. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
