Julia McKinnon netted the game-winning marker 38 seconds into overtime as the Buckeyes walked away with a 3-2 victory in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.

The Purple and Gold slip to 9-18-0 overall and 4-17-0 in conference play, while Ohio State moves to 8-12-5 on the season and 3-11-5 in league competition.

A scoreless first period saw strong defensive play from both the Mavericks and Buckeyes. MSU received a pair of power-play opportunities compared to one for Ohio State, but neither team could break the scoreless deadlock as each program registered four shots on goal.

Minnesota State and Ohio State remained in a scoreless deadlock until the 16:56 mark of the second period when nearly nine penalty minutes in the frame caught up with the Mavericks. Danielle Butters (London, Ont.) with a forehand chance upstairs. Minnesota State senior
Nicole Germaine (Mississauga, Ont.) answered back at 5:11 with a wrist shot from the left circle that bested senior

Anna Fiegert (Landshut, Germany) collected an assist on the marker to pull MSU within one. The Mavericks pulled even at 17:28 when junior
Shelby Moteyunas' (Cicero, N.Y.) shot from the point navigated a maze of bodies in front and found twine on the right side. Senior
Kari Lundberg (Woodbury, Minn.) and Germaine each earned helpers on the play. Neither team could break the 2-2 draw in regulation forcing Minnesota State's first overtime contest this season.

However just 38 seconds into the extra stanza, Kepler fired a shot that was saved by Butters, but a streaking McKinnon entered the slot and put away the rebound to secure a 3-2 victory for Ohio State.

Butters recorded a game-high 23 saves for MSU which failed to convert on four power-play opportunities. Steffes totaled 19 stops for the Buckeyes who ended two-of-seven on the man advantage and outshot MSU 26-21.

Minnesota State can claim the season series against Ohio State with a victory in tomorrow's series finale. Faceoff is slated for 1:07 p.m. ET at the OSU Ice Rink.
