No. 11 Mavericks Take Three-of-Four From WSC With Split Sunday

4/28/2013 6:34:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Wayne, Neb. --- Eleventh-rated Minnesota State had its season-high 12 game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon after splitting with host Wayne State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex but did take the series winning three of the four contests.

The Mavericks won game one, 8-1, before falling in the second game by a margin of 3-1 while sophomore third baseman Connor McCallum saw his hitting streak snapped at 16 games.

In the first game, senior second baseman Lucas Skjefte gave MSU an early 2-0 lead with a two-run blast to left-center in the top of the second inning. One inning later, junior centerfielder Parker Sullivan scored on a WSC error before junior first baseman Stetson Olson ripped a two-run single through the left side giving the Mavericks a five-run cushion.

The Purple and Gold padded the lead in the top of the fifth when sophomore catcher Nolan Johnson belted his third homer of the year to left-center and Olson followed that up with a two-run job over the left field fence, his seventh of the season, providing MSU with an 8-0 lead that was more than enough for junior righthander Bryce Bellin. Bellin tossed six innings while fanning seven batters and allowing three hits, including one unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, to improve to 2-1 on the year.

It was a different story for the MSU offense in game two as it was stymied by WSC junior Michael Frericks who tossed a complete game five-hitter while striking out nine Maverick batters. Junior C.J. Nolen gave the Wildcats a one-run lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to right before senior Brett Kiem crushed an RBI double down the left-field line in the second to put WSC up 2-0.

Junior shortstop Todd Standish produced the only MSU run of the game with a solo shot to left field in the top of the sixth, but it was answered by a solo home run from Wildcat senior Kevin Anderson in the bottom of the inning completing the 3-1 final. Senior righthander Nick Sutherland took the loss after surrendering three earned runs and eight hits while striking out three in six innings of work to drop on 2-2 on the year.

Olson ended the day four-for-seven with four RBI, a home run, a double, a run scored and a stolen base while Skjefte was three-for-six with two RBI, a home run, a double and a run scored.

Now 29-8 overall and 18-4 in the NSIC, Minnesota State hosts its final home games of the season Wednesday against Concordia-St. Paul with first pitch slated for 1:30 p.m.
