Box Score Mankato, Minn. --- Three second-period goals proved fatal for the Minnesota State women’s hockey team Friday night as it fell to No. 9 North Dakota, 4-2, in WCHA action at All Seasons Arena.       
 
Both squads failed to put the puck in the back of the net in the first period as junior Danielle Butters turned away all 19 UND shots she faced in the frame, including six on a two-minute penalty kill after junior center Kelsie Scott was put in the sin bin for elbowing at 12:51.
 
North Dakota started a three-goal second period when left wing Michelle Karvinen scored her 10th goal of the season at 4:22 as right wing Mary Loken tagged an assist on the play. Shortly afterward, Maverick senior Lauren Smith was called for a five-minute boarding major, and UND capitalized putting its second puck in the net of the contest with a power-play goal off the stick of center Josefine Jakobsen at 15:04.
 
History was made in the second period when Smith scored off senior Erika Magnussson’s shot giving her 18 goals on the year and tying her with Michelle Sikich (1998-99) and Melanie Salatino (2003-04) for the program’s single-season goals record. However just a minute and 20 seconds later, North Dakota returned the favor with a short-handed breakaway goal by Jakobsen, her second  of the night.
 
Jakobsen completed the hat trick to cap the UND scoring for the night at 13:04 as Karvinen earned her second assist of the game. Minnesota State answered at 17:25 thanks to junior Tracy McCann who put away her 12th goal of the season squeaking one past UND’s Shelby Amsley-Benzie. Junior center Kari Lundberg and senior defenseman Emilia Andersson garnered helpers on the play
 
Butters stopped a game-high 41 shots in a losing effort for the Mavericks who were unable to convert on three power-play opportunities.  UND ended one-of-three on the man advantage and outshot MSU by a margin of 45-22.
 
Minnesota State (9-14-3, 5-12-3-1 WCHA) aims for the series split tomorrow afternoon as the puck drops at 3:07 inside All Seasons Arena.
