The Mavericks improve to 5-9-0 on the year and 2-8-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while the Buckeyes slip to 3-8-2 and 2-8-2 in the conference.
This weekend's series sweeps marks MSU's first over OSU since Nov. 12-13, 2010, and its first home sweep over the Buckeyes since Nov. 9-10, 2007.
Ohio State claimed a 1-0 lead at 12:08 of the first period with a power play goal by senior
Ally Tarr. The Buckeyes were on the power-play when an additional MSU penalty was called giving OSU a six-on-four advantage that Tarr converted from the left side of the crease.
Minnesota State responded with a power-play goal of its own at 14:16 of the second period. Senior
Nicole Germaine (Mississauga, Ontario) had her shot saved by OSU senior
Lisa Steffes, but junior
Kathleen Rogan (Vancouver, B.C.) was there to shelf the rebound for her fifth power-play marker of the season.
The Mavericks' game-winning goal came from the stick of senior
Tracy McCann (Lakewood, Ohio) who picked up a rebound in the slot and beat Steffes on the right side of her pads 3:53 into the final period. Seniors
Kari Lundberg (Woodbury, Minn.) and
Dani Scholzen (Blaine, Minn.) were each credited with assists on the play.
Senior
Danielle Butters (London, Ont.) was outstanding for the second game in a row for the Mavericks stopping a game-high 41 shots, including 15 in the first period. Steffes earned 31 saves for OSU which outshot the Mavericks 42-33. MSU converted one-of-three power-play chances, while OSU finished one-of-four on the man advantage.
Minnesota State gets the holiday weekend off before travelling to St. Cloud to take on the Huskies Dec. 6-7.
